From road rage to slacking on the indicators, most British motorists will be acquainted with terrible drivers – or even be one yourself.

But now figures have shown exactly where in the country has the most self-styled poor drivers. A survey has found more than half of Brits in some parts of the country believe they're bad behind the wheel.

In one area, a staggering 60% admitted their skills were sub-par. The survey of 2,000 motorists found that three in five licenced drivers in East Anglia claimed they weren't an ideal chauffeur.

Wales and the East Midlands also had 57% of drivers admitting to the same. Overall, 52% of UK drivers claimed they could probably do with re-sitting their tests - and with 35million Brits with licences, this means as many as 18million don't consider themselves to be up to scratch.

In what may not come as a surprise to many, the survey also found that there was a gender divide when it came to how good a driver people considered themselves to be. Men was far more likely to boast of their driving skills, with 62% being comfortable on the road, compared with only 41% of women.

Despite this, men are more than twice as likely to be involved in car accidents than women. Data compiled by the RAC last year found that, for every 10million journeys in the UK in the first half of 2021, men were caught in 2.8 serious collisions compared to 1.04 for female drivers. In order, the regions who consider themselves unsure of their driving abilities are:

1 - East of England - 60%

2 - Wales - 57%

3 - East Midlands - 57%

4 - South West - 54%

5 - South East - 52%

6 - North West - 52%

7 - North East - 51%

8 - Scotland - 48 %

9 - Yorkshire & Humber - 48%

Regionally, the area with the largest number of 'good' drivers in the UK was the West Midlands (42%), followed by Scotland and Yorkshire & the Humber. Paula Williams, from Norwich – where drivers are least likely to consider their skills decent, admitted to having failed her test six times before eventually passing.

"My first test I failed on a minor technicality and that put me off for a while," she said. "I gave it two years and tried again, and failed, and again – six times in fact, before I finally passed my test last year.

"Despite my driving test failures I think it’s made me a better driver - I’m careful and know all the road signs, so I think I’m a good driver, although my husband would disagree, obviously." Thousands of crashes occur everyday on Britain's roads, with Government data showing there were were 1,695 people killed last year, as well as 136,002 casualties overall.

A spokesperson for CarMats.co.uk who compiled the survey data said: "Our study found that men thought they were the best drivers. Those from the West Midlands viewed themselves as the best drivers, while 60% of those from the East of England did not rate themselves behind the wheel."
