Scorned seaside town becomes Netflix destination - and it's even got a tube stop

Few could be blamed for wondering what a London tube station is doing half way up the country. In what would be the longest tube route in history, the ride from Grimsby to London would certainly be a unique one. But the mystery tube stop in the port town in North East Lincolnshire actually serves a different purpose.

The 86,000 residents of the town - which was founded by the Vikings in the 9th century and was once the busiest fishing port in the world - were no doubt surprised when the building popped up by the docks. Sadly, it wasn’t the government’s new attempt at a HS2-type transport link to northern towns.

For years, like many seaside towns, Grimsby has unfairly garnered a bad reputation in recent years and in 2022, it was ranked the 18th worst place to live in the UK in a survey by iLiveHere.

But proving it is on the up, the port was transformed into 1940s London for the Netflix sci-fi series Bodies last year for a month. This included the the transformation of one building into Aldgate East tube station. Other buildings were also turned into period shops and houses.

Simon Bird, Regional Director of the Humber said: “It’s great to see our Port of Grimsby being used by film and television production companies. The historic quarter is attracting a lot of interest from location managers and producers who like the authenticity and character of the place. We hope this is the start of a new venture for the area."

Greg Lacey, Head of Property of the Humber, explained that demand is growing for filming locations in Grimsby. “We know from the feedback we receive there is a demand in this area for period buildings and large space, as London and the south east has become overpriced, and companies are looking to the north. The film and TV industry is highly diverse with £6.3 billion spent on production last year, we only expect demand to continue to grow,” he said.

This isn’t the first time the Port of Grimsby has featured as a set. It has been used in TV shows such as Wheeler Dealers, and films including Atonement, starring Kiera Knightly, where it was transformed into a French village.

Bodies, which aired on Netflix on October 19 has a stellar cast including Line of Duty actor Stephen Graham, The Queen’s Gambit star Jacob Fortune-Lloyd and Kyle Soller, of Poldark fame. The series is both crime thriller and science fiction, and follows it four detectives investigating the same murder in East London but in different periods in history - the 1890s, the 1940s, the 2010s and in post-apocalyptic 2050.

Stephen Graham said in an interview with Netflix, “The sets on this show are magnificent, and… the intricacies and the attention to detail are phenomenal. You walk on set and you’re there in that world because they create it so beautifully.”
