Lewis Hamilton pays tribute to 'dear friend' Ken Block after star's tragic death

Lewis Hamilton led tributes from the Formula 1 world after the death of motorsport legend Ken Block.

The 55-year-old died on Monday as a result of a snowmobile accident in Wasatach County, Utah. Police said Block was riding a snowmobile on a steep slope which then upended and landed on top of him. He was pronounced dead at the scene of the crash.

Block made his name rallying in American and around the world, before moving on to rallycross later in his racing career. He also became a star on YouTube promoting gymkhana, co-owned the Hoonigan Racing Division and appeared on BBC TV series Top Gear.

Hamilton took to Instagram to react to the tragic news. He wrote: "I've been mostly off social media to focus on my health and well-being. Today, I received news of the loss of a dear friend. I am devastated to hear of Ken Block's passing.

"He was such an amazing person, always lived life to the fullest. I remember our first time working together and how positive he was. So much talent behind the wheel. Years ago, we had an amazing time heli-skiing and snowboarding in Canada.

"We held so much respect for one another. He will truly be missed and my thoughts and prayers go to his beautiful family. Gone too soon. Rest in peace, Ken."

Former F1 champion Jenson Button also wrote: "In shock at the passing of Ken Block. Such a talent that did so much for our sport. He was a true visionary with his own unique style and infectious smile. Our sport lost one of the best today but more importantly a great man. Sending love and hugs to the Block family."

McLaren chief executive Zak Brown posted an article announcing "legend" Block's death and said the news was "very sad". Alpine racer Esteban Ocon concurred with Block's legendary status, adding: "Thank you Ken for sharing racing passion the way you did."

Eight-time rally champion Sebastien Ogier said of his friend and old competitor: "Ken was a visionary, so passionate and inspiring. He knew like no other how to combine motorsport and a big show. He lived his life to the fullest and I'll never forget his smile and laugh."
