Andrey Arshavin was in enemy territory on Monday night, with the former Arsenal star watching Tottenham Hotspur's victory over Fulham, and the Russian's attempted disguise didn't fool the fans around him.

Spurs won 2-0 in their London derby thanks to goals from Son Heung-min and James Maddison either side of the half-time break. The victory took them back above Arsenal in the Premier League, with the Gunners drawing at Chelsea on Saturday.

Arshavin donned a hat and glasses while taking public transport to the game in North London, sharing a video on social media. While few other passengers appeared to pay him much attention, one fan could be seen sticking his tongue out in apparent recognition.

Now 42 years old, Arshavin spent the bulk of his career in Russia either side of a four-year spell with Arsenal. The Euro 2008 star, who ended his career in Kazakhstan, scored 31 goals in 144 games for the Gunners.

"Andrei Arshavin wanted to see good football in North London so came to see us" one Spurs fan wrote on social media. "My favourite Arsenal player of all time is a closet Tottenham fan you don't know how happy I am," wrote another.

The snap also prompted some Arsenal fans to reminisce about Arshavin's finest moment for the club. He famously scored all four goals in a Premier League clash with Liverpool in 2009, as a 4-4 draw dented the Merseyside club's title charge.

Spurs and Arsenal remain the only two unbeaten teams in the Premier League after nine rounds of fixtures, having drawn the first North London Derby of the campaign. Ange Postecoglou's team sit top of the league, two points above their rivals, though the manager insisted there is still room for improvement from his team.

“Don’t get me wrong, people should enjoy it, I’m grumpy because that’s just the way I am," the Australian said after Spurs' Monday night win. "At the end of the day, if we want to be the team we want to be, we have to take opportunities and lessons to improve and not get sidetracked by results.

“There will be days where we may not win, but we play our football and I’ll be more than happy to commend the performance. I’m not going to let the result take away the fact that we can, and we’ve already showed that we can, play better with the ball than we did in the second half.

"My role within that is to make sure I’m always honest with my feedback to the players," he added. "That’s what they’ll want, they will want to know how they’re going to get better, and we’ve got plenty of things from the second half to show them how we can.”
