One raunchy Halloween display has caused serious controversy in the community after officials demanded it to be taken down.

Residents in Grantsville, Utah, have been swept up in a social media buzz after Christopher Fujishin erected a festive scene in the street. He arranged some skeletons in a circle of camp chairs with one seemingly pole dancing on a street pole, wearing bright purple wig. The evocative skeleton only started receiving backlash when it was caught on camera.

One neighbour made repeated attempts to cut the main, pole-dancing offender down. Christopher said: “It may be a little risqué for some people, but it’s all in the name of fun.”

Then the city posted a photo of the display to its Facebook page, telling whoever was responsible for the decorations, had until 9pm that night to take it down, since it’s “against city code” to attach anything to street poles.

According local news outlet the Ogdenite, city officials of the Utah town were less than happy with Christopher’s gag. The post quickly garnered a lot of attention. Grantsville locals took to the comments to air their opinions. One person said: “I guess teaching our children respect, decency and manners has gone by the side.”

Christopher responded by removing one skeleton from the city street pole, and then making his skeletal scene bigger and brighter. He added more lights, some music and some new skeleton friends. Some neighbours dropped of items to add some personal flair.

“We look forward to keeping this going, and getting it a little more elaborate as we go,” Christopher added.

Even off social media, the ordeal is the talk of the town. Punters in a Grantsville restaurant told NBC that they thought it was all in good humour and added a much needed light touch to the town’s community: “It brings a lot of good humour that we need to a small town”.

For another person, this was more of a political moral issue, that was about how they raised and taught young people in the community about value systems, saying: “I guess teaching our children respect, decency and manners has gone by the way side.”

For another man this was a dog whistle for a much larger, more endemic issue for the youth of America. He said: “If kids understand what [the display] is then maybe the problem is something else.”

“This really made me giggle out loud," one person wrote, while another criticised the city for being a “buzzkill” and making the homeowner take down the display. Another commenter suggested there could be a way around the red tape: “Perhaps if the pole dancer were to wear a swimsuit it would be more appropriate in their neighbourhood? “
