Pickford hits out at 'arrogant' refs after incident in Everton loss to Liverpool

Jordan Pickford has called for "less arrogance" from referees after his Everton team fell to a 2-0 defeat against Liverpool on Saturday.

Two second-half goals from Mohamed Salah, the first from the penalty spot, ensured Jurgen Klopp's team came away with all three points. However, the visitors were harmed by what some have argued was inconsistency from referee Craig Pawson.

Pawson sent off Everton's Ashley Young for two yellow cards inside the first 40 minutes of the game, forcing Sean Dyche's side to play more than half the game a man down. Liverpool defender Ibrahima Konate then escaped a second yellow after the break, much to the frustration of Pickford and Dyche, with the latter shown a card himself for his protests.

"I can't comment too much because it doesn't do me any real favours, but a bit of dialogue would be nice," Pickford said after the game. "Less arrogance would be nice as well."

Everton held their own with 10 men, only to concede a penalty - following a VAR check - for handball by Michael Keane. Salah beat Pickford from the spot, before adding a late second to seal victory.

The result leaves Everton down in 16th, just three points above the relegation zone. Liverpool sit third, a point off league leaders Manchester City, though Tottenham can overtake both with victory over Fulham on Monday night.

“I don’t really want to be talking about officials but I’ve got no choice today,” Dyche told club media after his team's loss. “I thought a lot of the decisions were very hard to take but the main one being their centre-half ]Konate].

“It’s impossible he doesn’t get booked a second time to take the game to 10 v 10. I think that is very frustrating and I’ll be surprised if anyone disagrees with that. I spoke to the referee after the game and he said he thought the ball got away from [Beto] and therefore it wasn’t a yellow card which… I haven’t got a clue.

“It’s not a difficult decision. Why do you think their manager took [Konate] off as quickly as he possibly could?

“Look, I don’t want to blame the whole outcome on that. The first half we didn’t do enough ourselves but we kept our shape and limited them. Then we go down to 10 men. The first yellow [for Young] was touch and go and the second one is a yellow.

“I’m just frustrated because I don’t want to be talking about officiating. I don’t want to be making excuses but the decision to not send off their player had a massive effect on the game.”
