The UK's worst streets for broadband have been revealed

The UK doesn't exactly have the best broadband Internet in the world. But while certain parts of the country enjoy ultrafast full-fibre connections, others really suffer. That's at least according to a new report from Broadband Genie which outlines exactly which streets in the UK have the slowest broadband speeds.

Morriston Close in Watford, Hertfordshire tops the list with an average broadband speed of 0.6Mb/s. That's so slow it doesn't even qualify as 'broadband', which typically delivers speeds of 25Mb/s to users.

And spare a thought for residents of Wade Court in Cheltenham, who just about get 1.2Mb/s download.

  • Borstal Street, Rochester (1.39Mb/s)
  • Rocks Lane, London (1.42Mb/s)
  • Cefn Road, Bridgend (1.43Mb/s)

The strange thing is that almost all residents on these streets are able to upgrade to superfast broadband with at least 30Mb/s speeds, with 8/10 of them having access to Ultrafast broadband of 300Mb/s.

With the price of broadband and other bills still rising, it's easy to understand why they might not be able to afford the upgrade.

Alex Tofts of Broadband Genie said: "No customer should put up with sluggish broadband, especially in a year where we’ve had to endure record high mid-contract price rises.

“The Universal Service Obligation is in place to ensure everyone has access to what the Government deems ‘decent’ broadband via a fixed connection. However, a significant number of people are still being left behind.

“Overall, the Watford area, including Morriston Close, does have access to fast broadband. Our research highlights that residents of Britain’s slowest streets could be suffering in silence, as faster broadband is available to their homes.

“If you haven’t reviewed your broadband contract in the last two years, it’s likely you can switch or renew to a faster deal at no extra cost. For the majority of switches, your new providers will do the legwork for you when switching your old connection over and isn’t as daunting as it seems."
