Pep Guardiola heralded his flying winger Jeremy Doku as a Manchester City star for the exciting future.

The Belgian international set up the first goal and led the Brighton defence a merry dance in a pulsating first half performance.

City boss Guardiola maintained: “He is an exceptional winger. He is smart. He has the quality to go to the byline for the first goal. I’m really pleased for his impact since he has come in to us. He can be a star for many years to come in this house.”

Guardiola saw his side hang on in the dying minutes after going off the boil but he added: “No team in the world can control a game for 95, 96 minutes. I was surprised we did it for 55, 60 minutes.”

City will face neighbours Manchester United next week in the first Premier League game in the aftermath of Sir Bobby Charlton’s death.

“I am sorry on behalf of the Manchester City family to his family, to Manchester United’s family and for English football. I think next week when we go to Old Trafford we will be present to make a first tribute.

“I love this country for many things. One of them is how they take care of the legends of each club. They are part of each club. Sir Bobby Charlton represented Manchester United and English football.”

Brighton’s Solly March faces a long spell on the sidelines after being stretchered off with what appeared a serious knee injury adding to a long list of absentees.

Manager Roberto De Zerbi said: “We are losing too many players. It’s tough and we will play against Ajax (Europa League) on Thursday without important players. I don’t think we are ready to compete in the competition.”

On a second half comeback after a lacklustre opening he added: “We were too shy in the first half. We have to compete with more energy and personality. We have to improve and become bigger.”
