Jake Quickenden has hit back at a fan for calling him "gaunt" as he admitted to being "miserable and hungry".

The former X Factor star has had a complete change of career as he is training for his debut as a professional MMA fighter. Yet his 10-month intensive training regime has left many fans expressing concern over the changes to his physical appearance. Taking to social media, one person asked: "What's happened to Jake Quickenden? He looks so gaunt! Hope he's ok."

Jake then re-shared the comment and wrote: "Please be careful commenting on people’s weight I know sometimes it comes from a good place but you never know what someone is going through and a comment can really set people back if struggling. I’ve been training hard, working a lot and been ill recently I also have to make weight for my fight coming up which is a lot lower than I walk about at.

"I’m fine and as soon as the fight over I will return to my normal weight, it’s not sustainable and I’m miserable and hungry most the time. Life is to be enjoyed and have everything in moderation which I haven’t been doing. But whether you think someone is fat, too thin, looking gaunt etc just don't say anything as you don’t know what they could be going through. Cheers."

The I'm A Celebrity star was supported by his celeb pals, as Love Islander Alex Bowen wrote: "Mate forget what people say man! You stepping into a cage is admirable to look back and say you done this in your life is class. Keep it going and good luck." Drag Race UK star Danny Beard posted a string of clapping emojis while soap star Jamie Lomas added: "Looking good brother."

However, some fans remained concerned about Jake's appearance as one said: "Is the fight really worth it if loosing and being the weight you are is making you miserable?" Another added: "I think this is incorrect and quite irresponsible of you, people don’t have to say it publicly, but as you are a public figure, it regrettably comes with the territory! Sorry but it does, however, if a friend started to look fragile and gaunt I believe YOU should absolutely say something, as this could potentially save their life if they were suffering with an eating disorder."

Someone else commented: "I don’t think this is about weight, it sounds much more to me about someone being concerned for your well being, which is very important. I think if someone you know is not looking themselves then you should most definitely ask if they are ok. Completely different to fat/thin shaming."

Jake recently opened up on how he was preparing for his upcoming fight against stand-up comedian Paul Smith while appearing at the Pride of Britain Awards. Speaking to The Mirror, he said: "I'm ready, I've been on a mad diet, but I can't wait for it to be over so I can eat. I wanted to do it to challenge myself, I like challenging myself and showing people you can push yourself."
