Corrie's Peter Barlow could relapse as he 'loses control' in Stephen fallout

Coronation Street's Peter Barlow will face his demons in upcoming scenes, as he's tempted by alcohol once more following his deadly actions.

Peter, played by actor Chris Gascoyne, ran over and killed Stephen Reid in a recent episode to stop him from hurting Jenny Connor. It's since emerged to him that Jenny was no longer in danger when Peter struck Stephen, and so the claim of self-defence might not stand.

He was arrested for the murder of Stephen before being interrogated this week, while his future is uncertain given he will soon leave the ITV soap. But Peter could face troubles from his past with a possible relapse on the cards. Peter has battled alcoholism for years and, while he is currently sober, the character could be tempted by alcohol as he struggles to cope with his actions. As the future looks bleak for the character, he will face his demons with "turbulent times ahead".

Actor Chris revealed: "There is no doubt he'll be tempted to drink to kill the pain. He has to live with what he's done and will always suffer. This is a real danger zone for him and it will be interesting to see how he deals with his demons.

"Without giving too much away, this will affect his future. Peter has been arrested on suspicion of murder, he's facing prison, the drink is on his mind again and Audrey wants him to pay for what he's done. Peter can be his own worst enemy and there is a turbulent time ahead."

Chris went on, sharing Peter's terror: "Peter begins to lose control and thinks: 'What have I done? Was Jenny in danger?' He gets in deep conflict with himself because it doesn't matter how it happened, he has killed someone. What kind of a person does that make him? He's terrified."

Peter will struggle with his mental health, as he realises what he thought was happening and what actually happened that day could be very different. Chris said: "When Peter finds out that Stephen had actually let Jenny go before he drove into him, that really affects his state of mind."

airs Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays at 8pm on ITV1 and X.
