Andy Robertson has been seen wearing a sling as fears grow that the Liverpool star could be ruled out until 2024.

Robertson, 29, had to be substituted following a collision with Spain goalkeeper Unai Simon just before half-time in Scotland's 2-0 defeat in Seville last Thursday. The left-back returned to Merseyside to be assessed by Liverpool's medical staff and while there is hope of a shorter layoff, Scotland boss Steve Clarke isn't sure if his captain will be available for the Tartan Army's final two Euro 2024 qualifiers next month.

On Wednesday, Robertson was pictured with his right arm in a protective sling, although he still managed to make it to Greggs in Wilmslow, Cheshire. Ahead of Scotland's 4-1 loss in a friendly with France on Tuesday, Clarke was asked if he could provide an update on the 29-year-old's situation but was unable to shed much light.

"As always with injured players, we send them back to their club; Andy's gone back to Liverpool," the Scotland manager explained. "Liverpool will deal with his injury. Obviously, it's a shoulder issue and Liverpool will deal with it. If he's fit for next month, it's great. If he's not fit for next month then hopefully he'll be fit as soon as possible for his club."

Regardless of whether Robertson is ruled out for an extended period or not, Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp will need to find a replacement and is likely to turn to deputy left-back Kostas Tsimikas. Joe Gomez could also slot in on the left-hand side of defence for the Reds, while academy star Luke Chambers is another option to cover Robertson.

The former Hull City ace, who's now in his eighth season as a Liverpool player, looks certain to miss Saturday's Merseyside Derby clash with Everton as well as next Thursday's home game against French side Toulouse in their third Europa League group-stage fixture. Following that is another match at Anfield, with Nottingham Forest paying a visit to the Premier League.

Klopp and co then head to Bournemouth in the Carabao Cup fourth round to start November and then travel to Luton. Robertson has played every minute of Premier League action so far this season and is desperate to help the Reds improve on last term's nightmare campaign which saw them slump to a fifth-place finish.
