Driver 'slams on brakes' after spotting 'jet black and massive big cat' in UK

A stunned van driver who spotted a ‘big cat’ on the prowl through the British countryside was so shocked at the sighting they slammed on the brakes.

Photos show what appears to be a black panther strolling through the Colwyn Bay area in Wales. It’s not the first time glimpses of the animal have been reported across the UK and experts recently pointed to a ‘huge increase’ in sightings. The witness, who didn’t want to be named, said: “Everyone who has seen the video is very sure it's a black panther. It's jet black and massive, with a huge tail - and it's moving as cats do.

"It was very exciting watching it. People have been talking about seeing it, then I was just driving my van and I spotted it. I just slammed on the brakes.”

Rumours of the huge mammals living throughout the UK have been fuelled by the Dangerous Wild Animals Act of 1976 that saw big cats previously held as pets released into the wild. Some may have been released into the Welsh countryside, Gloucestershire Live reports.

The shocked driver added: "It's such a privilege seeing an animal like that. I'm still over the moon about it. Apparently some black panthers were let loose in Wales in the 1970s and some pairs have bred.

“I don't think they're a risk. I hike around here all the time. They are very solitary animals and wouldn't go near us unless they really had to."

Earlier this year, specialist big cat trackers claimed they had conclusive evidence of the animals roaming around the UK. After a spate of suspicious attacks on sheep, researchers found ‘phenomenal’ DNA evidence after a hair found on a fence matched with that of a leopard’s.

Investigators reckon there are between 100 and 200 big cats in the wild throughout Britain, from black panthers to pumas and hybrid cats. Sightings are widespread and areas such as the Forest of Dean, the New Forest and the Moors could be home to a range of big cats.
