Netflix fans have been left furious after the showrunners of 1899 confirmed the mystery drama had not been renewed for a second season.

Set in 1899, the dark show got viewers talking as the story commenced aboard the steamship Kerberos, as wealthy Europeans set sail for a new life in New York.

The German series, starring Emily Beecham and Aneurin Barnard, is packed full of plot twists and takes a dark turn once the boat’s captain Eyk Larsen encounters a second ship, which went missing months prior.

Yet despite a tantalising final plot twist in the show’s last episode, showrunners Baran bo Odar and Jantje Friese have confirmed that the show will not be returning.

“With a heavy heart we have to tell you that 1899 will not be renewed,” they penned on Instagram.

“We would have loved to finish this incredible journey with a 2nd and 3rd season as we did with Dark. But sometimes things don’t turn out the way you planned.”

They continued: “That’s life. We know this will disappoint millions of fans out there. But we want to thank you from the bottom of our hearts that you were a part of this wonderful adventure. We love you. Never forget.”

Welsh actor Aneurin Barnard reposted the show creators’ statement to his own Instagram page, writing alongside it: “This has made us all heartbroken.”

Fans of the show immediately took to Twitter to criticise the streaming giant’s decision, with one writing: “ Netflix are testing my patience now! Because what did 1899 do to you? I’m tired of your games. I’m this close to cancelling my subscription!”

Another echoed: “Why on earth are Netflix cancelling 1899. I don’t understand their logic at all. Surely the writers can pitch the other seasons to another platform.”

A third penned: “Why start a series on Netflix if they're going to cancel it after the first season.

“You're wasting my time and you're playing with the show creators. Especially when they have seasons planned out. please renew.”

One fan begged: “PLEASE CAN ANY OTHER STREAMING PLATFORM PICK 1899 IM BEGGING.”

Within its first week of dropping on the streaming platform, 1899 surged up Netflix’s top 10 chart to land at the second spot, behind only the highly anticipated fifth season of The Crown.

Within four days of its debut on the platform, 1899 garnered around 79.27 million hours of viewership.
