Apple TV+ has launched a monster of a new series, as Godzilla comes to the small screen. Monarch: Legacy of Monsters takes viewers back to a world inhabited by giant monsters including Godzilla, King Kong and some of Hollywood’s biggest stars.

The 10-part series – from Legendary Pictures’ TV arm – forms the latest chapter in the studio’s ‘MonsterVerse’ that began with 2014 smash-hit, Godzilla. It comes ahead of the upcoming epic Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire, slated for release next year.

Legacy of Monsters joins Apple’s streaming platform alongside blockbuster shows like Ted Lasso, The Morning Show and Lessons in Chemistry in forming the iPhone maker’s expansive film and TV library. All of this content can be streamed with a subscription to Apple TV+, which usually costs £8.99 a month.

Legacy of Monsters picks up in the wake of 2014 movie Godzilla and the thunderous battle between Godzilla and the Titans that devastated San Francisco and revealed to the world that monsters are real. The series tracks two siblings who follow in their father’s footsteps to uncover their family’s connection to the secretive organisation known as Monarch.

Clues lead them into the world of monsters and down a rabbit hole to Army officer Lee Shaw, taking place in the 1950s and more than half a century later where Monarch is threatened by what he knows. The dramatic saga – spanning three generations – reveals buried secrets and the ways that epic, earth-shattering events can reverberate through our lives.

Who is in the cast of Monarch: Legacy of Monsters?

The Legacy of Monsters cast comprises an impressive mix of screen veterans and relative newcomers. Its biggest name is 80s legend and The Thing star Kurt Russell, who is joined by his son Wyatt Russell in playing Army officer Lee Shaw 50 years apart.

They are joined by star of Apple K-Drama Pachinko, Anna Sawai, as Cate Randa, a schoolteacher and survivor of the San Francisco battle who travels to Japan to tidy up some family affairs. She is joined by Japanese newcomer Ren Watabe as her previously-unknown half-brother Kentaro.

The Flash’s Kiersey Clemons plays American ex-pat May, alongside The Morning Show’s Joe Tippett as officer worker Tim, Elisa Lasowski as expert operative Duvall and Mari Yamamoto as scientist Keiko. Workaholics’ Anders Holm rounds off the cast as Monarch researcher Bill Randa, with John Goodman reprising his role from 2017’s Kong: Skull Island as an older version of the character.

When is Monarch: Legacy of Monsters released?

Monarch: Legacy of Monsters premiered with a two-episode drop exclusively on Apple TV+ on Friday, November 17. New episodes will launch every Friday until the finale on January 12.
