Kansas City Chiefs stars Patrick Mahomes and Travis Kelce are two of six global sports stars investing a combined £164 million ($211.4m) into F1 team Alpine.

Mahomes, 28, and Kelce, 34, who are hoping to stage a Super Bowl title defence this season with the Chiefs, have invested in another thrilling sport, F1, joining Otro Capital, a strategic investment backing Alpine for a 24 percent stake.

World No. 2 golfer Rory McIlroy, former Heavyweight champion boxer Anthony Joshua, Liverpool footballer Trent Alexander-Arnold, and former Chelsea and Manchester United midfielder Juan Mata are the other sports stars who have joined in with the investment.

Alpine is enduring a mixed 2023 f1 season, sitting sixth in the constructors' championship, with drivers Pierre Gasly and Esteban Ocon sitting 11th and 12th respectively in the drivers' standings. Mirror Sport takes a look at the five investors.

Travis Kelce

The Kansas City tight end is in the limelight at the moment following the emergence of his romance with singer Taylor Swift. Kelce is a two-time Super Bowl winner, even defeating brother Jason Kelce, a center for the Philadelphia Eagles, in the 2022 Super Bowl.

Kelce missed the narrow Week 1 defeat to the Detroit Lions through injury but the Chiefs have gone unbeaten since his return and sit top of the AFC West. The eight-time Pro Bowler has three touchdowns to his name this season.

"I am thrilled to lead an investor group and join forces with Patrick and the team at Otro Capital on this exciting venture with Alpine F1,” said Kelce. "Our shared passion for excellence and innovation forms the cornerstone of this partnership. It’s about being able to contribute to a sport that demands precision, teamwork, and relentless pursuit of success. I am looking forward to this new chapter and can’t wait to see what we achieve together.”

Patrick Mahomes

The top NFL quarterback at present and a reigning league MVP and Super Bowl champion. Mahomes has broken numerous NFL records in his young career and has a decade or more to claim more Super Bowl rings or MVP awards, being just 28 years old.

Mahomes has thrown for 1,593 yards and for 11 touchdowns so far this season. He said: "I’ve always had a passion for all sports. The opportunity to lead an investor group with Travis in Alpine F1 alongside Otro Capital was one I couldn’t pass up.

"It’s an exciting time for the sport and this is an opportunity to bring our shared values to the world stage. I’m looking forward to being a part of its growth.”

Rory McIlroy

The 34-year-old's involvement comes fresh off the back of a Ryder Cup victory with Europe in Italy. Since turning pro in 2007, McIlroy has won the PGA Championship twice, the US Open, and The Open Championship. The Masters, however, is yet to land in the PGA loyalist's impressive trophy cabinet.

"Passion for excellence on the golf course has led me to admire the same pursuit in Formula 1," McIlroy, who hails from Northern Ireland, said. "Partnering with Otro Capital in Alpine F1 is an exhilarating venture that unites my love for sports, competition, and the relentless drive to be the best.”

Anthony Joshua

A two-time world heavyweight champion boxer. First clinched the titles with a devastating win over boxing icon, Wladimir Klitschko, in 2017. He lost and regained his belts off Andy Ruiz Jr, before losing them to current champion, Oleksandr Usyk.

Joshua is hoping to make his way back to the top of the heavyweight mountain and he has won his last two fights. "The chance to strategically invest with Otro Capital in Alpine was an opportunity I couldn’t ignore," Joshua said.

"The heritage of the team, mixed with the global growth of Formula 1 as a sport and brand made this a very serious proposition. I am excited to start this journey with Otro and a great group of fellow investors and hope to help the team achieve its full potential.”

“I’m excited to be joining Otro Capital’s group as an investor into Alpine F1 along with my brother Tyler,” said Alexander-Arnold. “Having been to Formula 1 races as a fan, I love the high-pressure environment of the paddock and I’ve seen first hand how incredibly impressive the Alpine team is.

“Our shared goal as an investment group is to help contribute to its continued success on the grid, at a time when F1 is facing incredible growth as a sport. As a footballer, I understand the importance of teamwork, innovation, and determination in achieving goals.”

Mata won both the World Cup and European Championships with his country, Spain. He also won an FA Cup, Champions League, and Europa League with Chelsea before moving on to Manchester United.

The midfielder then won another FA Cup, a League Cup, and a Europa League. Mata left England in 2022 for Galatasaray, before heading to Japan, where he plays for Vissel Kobe.
