Two Welsh fans have been hospitalised after an alleged clash with England supporters at the Rugby World Cup.

The two nations played their quarter-finals in Marseille - Wales losing to Argentina on the Saturday before England saw off Fiji 24 hours later. Both sets of supporters congregated in the southern city and it was late on Sunday night that French police were called to high street La Canebiere.

They arrived shortly before midnight, where they found a 57-year-old man with a head injury as well as his son, in his 20s, who was also injured. Both were taken to hospital for treatment for their injuries, but were not in a life-threatening condition.

Local news outlets claim that the two men told police they'd been attacked by two England supporters with a British man in his 30s later arrested. Regional newspaper La Provence stated that five grams of cocaine was found in his possession.

A French police source told The Times : “It’s true that there was a fight but it should not be blown out of proportion. It involved four British people, two on each side, but it was an isolated incident. We should not lose sight of the fact that globally the weekend went well in Marseille."

It comes after footage emerged online of England fans fighting in the stands at the Stade Velodrome on Sunday. Individuals who were dressed up as admirals were involved in the ugly scenes, with some being thrown forward several rows.

The two quarter-finals were the final games to be played in Marseille, who have hosted six games throughout the tournament. The two semi-finals and the final will be played at the Stade de France, located in the northern Paris suburb of Saint-Denis. New Zealand will play Argentina on Friday with England taking on the holders South Africa on Saturday.

The All Blacks overcame the No 1 ranked Irish side on Saturday night, gaining revenge after a series loss to them last summer. It saw the curtain come down on the career of Johnny Sexton, who retires without ending his country's last eight curse.

England meanwhile narrowly beat Fiji in Marseille to set up a clash with South Africa, whom they lost to in the final four years ago in Japan. Defeats to the world champions last year proved to be Eddie Jones final game in charge at Twickenham.
