Any parent will know all too well about the struggle of deciding on a child's name. While some opt for a traditional well-established name, in more recent years unusual names have soared in popularity - but this could be about to change.

Despite television programmes and celebrities playing a key role in influencing some of the more unusual names we hear today, new data indicates a slight shift with some old-fashioned names set to make a comeback. With only a few months left of 2023, experts are already looking ahead to the baby names that parents will be opting for in 2024.

Name expert and Nameberry creator Pamela Redmond said: "Today's parents are fixated on sending the right messages with the names they choose. The perfect baby name for 2024 is one that is ahead of the style curve, personally significant, and identity-defining."

Celebrities can often influence naming trends and this is true for unisex names. Names that would traditionally be seen as 'girl' names are now becoming popular names for boys too. Rihanna and A$AP Rocky named their son Riot Rose, and Chrissy Teigen and John Legend chose Wren for their son.

However, 2024 is set to see a huge spike in traditional and 'grown-up' names, with one name making its comeback. Experts calculate Arthur will be the number one traditional name in 2024. According to NameBerry, the name Arthur is both a boy's name and a girl's name of Celtic origin meaning " bear". Arthur has always been a contender for possible names for the young British princes, chosen as a middle name for Prince Louis.

  • Betty
  • Cedric
  • Dolores
  • Duncan
  • Florence
  • Georgina

The hit television series Peaky Blinders is said to have influenced the rise in popularity of names such as Arthur and Finn. ONS data for 2021 indicated the name Arthur had used more than 3,000 times.
