Vinicius Junior has admitted he will return to Flamengo before his career is over, even as he closes in on a new contract at Real Madrid.

The Brazilian has starred since breaking into the Madrid team in 2018, winning two La Liga titles, the Copa del Rey and the Champions League. His current contract was set to expire at the end of the season, but Los Blancos are ready to hand him a bumper new deal.

The Spanish giants bought him from Brazilian side Flamengo back in 2017, with the Rubro-Negro having been his boyhood club. And Vinicius has now revealed that he promised his father he would return to South America before he retires.

"I think I could stay here my whole career, but the club of my life is Flamengo. I promised my father I would go back one day. I have to keep this promise," the Madrid star told France Football.

"I love life here in general, and it's going well for my family too. When my loved ones walk around, they are recognised and they wish us nothing but happiness. Little by little, I discovered this new life, new emotions, a fervour.

"Madrid is unique. Everyone around the world tells me about this club. And apart from that, I like it. I'm quite a homebody but we do a lot of activities."

Vinicius is now set to sign a deal keeping him at the Bernabeu until at least 2027, with a major pay rise coming with it. While the attacker has only scored twice, Madrid are currently top of La Liga.

And back in February, when Carlos Ancelotti's side defeated Chelsea in the Champions League, Arsenal legend Thierry Henry hailed Vinicius. He insisted that the Brazilian was now the leader in the Spanish capital.

"This is what I am saying with Vinícius Jr, he pushes the ball to pass Reece James. He knows that, at that moment, he is going to lose that race. Okay, ‘I am going to lose it, but then I push again’. This is what I am saying, he thinks about what he is doing," Henry told CBS Sports.

"He makes you fall. He makes you stumble. Pushes the ball again. He stops you. Squares you, then pushes the ball again. That’s the difference. He is a thinker. When I see Vinicius Jr on the ball, I can feel it, he’s cooking," the striker stated.

"In the last two years, Vinicius Jr has been solid. Do you know why I would give him being ahead of others? Where he is coming from? From an unwanted guy in a dressing room to a guy who gets kicked around every time he plays the game.

"Getting booed by the fans. Abused in pre-season. Again, the guy delivers. They try to kick him. They wanted him out of the dressing room. He delivers. Now, it looks a tiny bit like his team."
