Grindr killer Stephen Port and Richard Huckle, dubbed Britain's worst paedophile, had a sexual relationship while locked up together, it has been claimed.

Port, who murdered at least four men, struck up a friendship with Huckle while both were behind bars at HMP Belmarsh in south east London. The sex between the two men was said to be an "open secret" at the Category A prison which houses some of the UK's most dangerous and disturbing inmates.

The pair were then placed in different prisons but their paths crossed while Port, 48, was waiting to be sentenced for raping and murdering four men. A source at HMP Belmarsh told Mirror Online: "It's an open secret the two of them had sex, everyone knows about it.

"They were both in the max area of the prison but when the cells door are open those in that area can mix. You have 90 inmates being overseen by three guards, they can't see everything going on in every cell. It happened when they were both here before Port was sentenced, their paths crossed. But now they've both been moved to different prisons - although I don't know if it's because of the stories around them."

Vile Huckle, 32, was arrested in December 2014 at Gatwick Airport after a tip-off from Australian Police. He was convicted of 71 counts of serious sexual assaults against children in Malaysia. In June 2016 he was given a minimum prison term of 25 years, less the time he had already spent on remand.

In October, 2019, Huckle was tortured and murdered while an inmate. One of his fellow prisoners, Paul Fitzgerald, was convicted of his his murder and jailed for 34 years for the gruesome killing, which saw Huckle tied up, beaten, strangled, sexually assaulted and repeatedly stabbed.

Port, known as the 'Grindr killer', met his victims via online gay social networks before giving them date-rape drug GHB, raping and murdering them at his flat in Barking. Port was given a whole-life order in November 2016 meaning it is unlikely he will ever be released. A commission on sex in prison, set up by the Howard League for Penal Reform, published in 2015, said that consensual sex between inmates is widespread and accepted.

The report found that men usually had sex in the cell of one of the participants or in the showers during periods of association, which is what the source at Belmarsh told the Mirror. However the commission was blocked by the Ministry of Justice from interviewing inmates and based their research on interviews by a criminologist with 26 former prisoners. It found that rape or coerced sex was rare.
