This weekend’s Celebrity SAS: Who Dares Wins sees three stars collapse in the 43 degree heat of a Vietnamese jungle.

Medics are required to give urgent attention to The Wanted’s Siva Kaneswaran, footballer Jermaine Pennant and Paralympian Jon-Allan Butterworth collapse in camp in worrying scenes.

The recruits had been lugging military equipment through the jungle, in hot, humid conditions when they all started to suffer the effects of dehydration, overheating and exhaustion.

DS Billy Billingham admits: “It looked like we’d been attacked by the real enemy, there was bodies falling everywhere. It was dramatic.”

The exhausted contestants did not initially realise they were suffering from overheating.

Former Health Secretary Matt Hancock checked on Siva, 46, who describes: “I was severely dehydrated, like, badly - talking gibberish. The world started spinning. I went to jelly - panic kicked in. I thought: ‘Am I going to die on TV?’

“I see Jermaine, eyes open on his back, he looked dead. That was a real out of body experience.”

Jermaine, 40, says another contestant, Love Islander Montana Brown, saw his eyes “roll back into [his] head”. Jermaine says: “It was weird. It just felt like I was just running on empty. It was like I couldn’t pick my feet up to walk. I felt like a zombie, literally just plodding.

“I just felt so weak like I was drugged. It was a bit like when I got knocked out in football with a head injury, I got hit on the head and then five seconds later I collapsed. It was the same feeling. It felt like any moment I’m going to collapse. But it was prolonged and you just got no control of what’s coming next.”

He describes of the challenge: “Because it’s humid, your sweat’s just sitting there boiling on your skin and it’s doing the opposite effect, ultimately you turn it into a kettle.” Cyclist Jon, 37, says: “I felt like my heart rate was going really quick. Then I blacked out. It was sheer panic.”

DS Billy continues: “They were all pretty shaky. So we stopped, got them back, get some fluids into them. And as I’d gone into that process of resting, they just started dropping. I think it was Jon who went down first, then bang, the next one. Siva. And initially we were thinking, is he playing the game here? Is this for real?

“And to be honest, you’ve got to leave that to the hands of the medics. You can’t mess around with something like that.”

Celebrity SAS: Who Dares Wins continues on Sunday at 9pm on Channel 4.
