Leo Sayer has revealed that he has been hospitalised in Australia after falling 'very ill' shortly before he was due to travel to the UK.

The 75-year-old musician took to Facebook on Tuesday to share the concerning update, after he was forced to cancel his flight to Britain for an upcoming tour – and revealed he's been in hospital for three weeks.

"I haven’t posted anything publicly about this before but I couldn’t fly or make the recent shows in the UK as I became very ill just before the trip," he explained. "I have been in hospital here for the last 3 weeks in Australia with kidney, bladder and prostrate complications."

The You Make Me Feel Like Dancing singer, who has been living in rural Australia since 2005, went on to apologise to those who'd been inconvenienced by the change of plans. He also thanked his music promoter Tony Denton and Butlins, where Leo was expected to perform this month, for their assistance in rescheduling the shows.

"I'm so sorry to have disappointed my fans but these things can happen to us 75-year-olds!" he continued, before adding, "I'm still in hospital now but on the mend." Leo, who has recorded a whopping 16 studio albums over the course of his impressive career, also confirmed that he wouldn't be back on stage until next year at the earliest as he focuses on his recovery.

"I will take a necessary short break from activities and be back fighting for shows in 2024, particularly my UK and Ireland tour next autumn," he added.

The Grammy-winner has a history of health issues, having undergone surgery to remove a tumour and intestinal ulcers (one of which was cancerous) at the age of 65. The operation was successful and the doctors gave him the all-clear, prompting him to optimize his diet as a precautionary measure. He cut out dairy and junk food, which had previously trigger bloating and diarrhoea, and drastically reduced his alcohol intake.

"In terms of eating, I’d already cut out a few items which were irritating me, including wine, which is tricky in such a big wine-producing and consuming nation. My friends thought I was mad!" he told the Mirror in 2015. "But I went further and ditched coffee and tea. Now I live on peppermint tea and water."

Leo also lost both of his parents to cancer; his mother to bowel cancer at the age of 81, and his father to lung cancer at 76. Several members of his family, including uncles and aunts on both sides, have also died from the devastatingly common disease.
