Kane warns England will have 'unfinished business' as hosts at Euro 2028

Harry Kane insists England will have “unfinished business” in Euro 2028 after their Wembley heartbreak two years ago.

Three Lions captain Kane, 30, lost in the Euros final and has suffered near misses in the World Cup but says there will still be nothing like winning on their own turf.

England will now never have a better chance of winning after being named as joint hosts with the rest of the United Kingdom and Ireland for the tournament in five years’ time.

When asked whether England have unfinished business, Kane said: “I think so, we were so close to doing something really magical in the last Euros.

“That's football, it didn't end the way we wanted it to but for sure there will be a bit between our teeth. Not just in Germany next summer but being at home, playing games at Wembley will bring back memories of the 2021 Euros.

“We will have to wait and see, to win a tournament would be special but to win it in your home country would be a dream come true.”

Kane has played a key role in the Football Association’s bid to host the Euros as an ambassador and figurehead for Euro 2028. Bayern Munich star Kane played politician at St George’s Park when he met Prime Minister Rishi Sunak and, as England’s record scorer, he is writing his name into football folklore.

But Kane also says that staging a home Euros can inspire a whole generation and believes the Football Association have a proud record of staging tournaments. Incredibly, Wembley has staged the Euros 2020 final, the women’s Euros a year later and even has the Champions League final next June.

The Lionesses won their trophy at Wembley in the biggest day at the national stadium since 1966 and has been a huge boost for the women’s football. It is an amazing period of domination for English football - but now Kane says the team is determined to make sure the win as hosts.

Kane added: “It is amazing. We have got some of the best stadiums in the world without a doubt. The fans, everyone getting behind it, when we do tournaments here, maybe because we're English and we're biased there is just that special feeling behind it.

“We should be proud of the country that we have got the bid, it is massive not just for us but for future generations, being young, watching tournaments in your home country can make a big impact in your life.

“I am lucky enough to be involved in that and playing that. Not just us, but you saw with the Lionesses you saw how much of a generation you inspire by doing well in home tournaments especially, we should all be proud of that and be behind it.”

Kane also believes that he can get better and insists that he will keep pushing himself “to the limit” to make sure that he can help deliver the trophy for England.

He added: “There is definitely room for improvement. I have been coming to a stage over the last year or two when it has been coming together, having the experience, knowing your body, knowing the way you want to play, playing in high-pressure games.

“I have always been so proud to play for England and I am proud to play every minute that I think the thought of retiring would be pretty hard to even think about. I am someone who will always want to keep pushing and to keep testing the limits.

“I will probably keep going until I am not picked anymore and then accept that and take it on the chin but it depends on my path and if I am satisfied with a lot of different things. But I am loving every minute playing for England and I do not want it to end any time soon.”
