There were floods of tears on The Great British Bake Off for Abbi Lawson as she endured disastrous feedback during bread week - which saw her being axed from the show.

The 27-year-old vegetable grower from Cumbria became the latest hopeful to see her expiration date come up during the 2023 series of the Channel 4 light entertainment show. She had a horrible week that saw one of her bread dishes collapse and fall flat, and her showstopper effort - a plaited bread item that was in the shape of a tree.

Abbi received negative comments from the judges for all three of her efforts during Tuesday night’s show and viewers saw her crying halfway through the episode as the pressure built up. She apologised to the cameras and insisted she was crying because she felt “emotional”. Judge Paul Hollywood was unimpressed with her final efforts and sent her packing.

Abbi burst into tears when she was told the news that her baking dream was over. She said to camera: “I knew it was coming. You know what, I’m really proud of myself and, sorry, I’ve got my hankies… I never thought I would be able to do this.

“It’s given me such a massive confidence boost and I’ve had such amazing feedback and I’m going to remember it every day for the rest of my life. I am looking forward to getting back to my vegetables.”

And in a letter shared with fans via social media after her exit, she wrote: “What an incredible thing to do, bake cakes in a tent! I’ve had a truly wonderful time and met some absolutely amazing and talented people. I’m so proud of everything I achieved in my time in the tent, and I’m so grateful for everything I’ve learnt, from the judges, the bakers, and about myself. I loved every minute of it (even when Janice decided she was going to rise outwards instead of upwards!) and I can’t wait to see what the rest of the series brings!”

Viewers were sad to see Abbi leave the show - with many arguing fellow contestant Dan Hunter should have been voted off as he created an undercooked final piece that the judges were appalled by. One fan wrote on X: “Why on earth get rid of #Abbie? Yes, she had a bad week but she's a better baker over all than a number of others. Very grumpy now! #GBBO #BakeOff.”

Another wrote: “Crazy that Abbi went home, and not Dan who simply wrote pizza with unbaked bread! #GBBO #BAKEOFF.” While a further viewer demanded: “Justice for Abbi, Dan was did worse overall than her, he was worse on technical and his showstopper was worse?! Paul always seems to decide who's going by the end of the technical no matter how well people do in the showstopper. #GBBO #BakeOff.”

Tasha Stones was crowned star baker of the week after she made bread in the shape of Medusa. She was astonished and said: “I get star baker again. What the hell!” She won star baker the previous week with her Japanese Katsu & Matcha Illusion Biscuits.
