Disgraced entertainer Jimmy Savile is back in the spotlight over a decade after his death, as the BBC airs a controversial new drama about his sickening deeds and how he avoided justice by hiding behind his nationwide fame. The Reckoning sees actor Steve Coogan put his 'overwhelming sense of revulsion' to one side to play the paedophile convincingly.

The repulsive sex offender got away with preying on teenage girls, young children and those who were ill and disabled - and even the dead - for over 50 years. It wasn't until he went to the grave in 2011, aged 84, that Savile's deplorable acts were brought to light in an ITV documentary, and he was finally exposed as a disgusting paedophile, rapist and serial abuser.

After his death, claims of sexual assault led back to 1955, when Savile was manager of a club, and followed him right up until his final years as he hid behind organisations such as charities, hospitals, prisons and even the BBC in order to groom, get close to and attack his victims. Investigations at NHS hospitals, including Leeds General Infirmary and Broadmoor psychiatric hospital, alleged he sexually assaulted over 60 victims ranging in age from five to 75.

His depraved actions didn't end there, as there were also allegations he had sex with corpses at the Leeds General Infirmary mortuary. It was claimed that Savile was seen wheeling the body of a four-year-old child in a pram into a hospital mortuary. A former nurse told investigators how she was warned not to go down to the morgue if the 'pink-haired man is there'.

It was reported Savile bragged about stealing false eyes from the mortuary and used them to make rings and other pieces of jewellery. One necklace was sold at an auction for £75 after he died. The disgraced DJ is understood to have worn the sickening trophy as he recorded the last ever episode of Top of the Pops (TOTP) in 2006.

A report by retired judge Dame Janet Smith published in 2016 described that people would call Savile's campervan his 'f*** truck' or his 'sh****n' wagon'. One horrifying story saw witnesses claim Savile was having sexual intercourse with a young girl, and it was apparent from the movement of the van, when an elderly lady handed a member of his production team a jar of marmalade, to thank Savile for all the good work he did for young people.

Another story recounted to the judge heard a young girl say that she was going to marry Savile. When asked how that could possibly be, she said, "Well, after what happened last night, he's got to marry me". While Savile was working on TOTP, people would say he wore tracksuits because they were quick to get off. One witness said TOTP was known as 'Jimmy Savile's fodder night'.

Savile got away with all his crimes despite numerous victims reporting him when he was alive. London's Metropolitan Police launched an investigation after his death which saw 450 victims come forward. Scotland Yard ultimately ruled that Savile had been "hiding in plain sight" due to his celebrity status - and Peter Watt, of the NSPCC, said at the time that Savile was "one of the most prolific sex offenders we have ever come across".
