Holiday hack that gets you 50 days off in 2024 - using just 27 days annual leave
A clever way of booking annual leave lets you double the amount of time you have off work, turning the average 27 days into an impressive 50.
The hack for getting a longer stretch of time off involves planning around bank holidays. Each year, the average employee gets at least 28 days of paid annual leave and there are eight public bank holidays. This means you can maximise your time off work by booking leave on either side of bank holidays, resulting in more opportunity for longer trips. It can also come in handy for parents when making plans around the school holidays.
The holiday hack can be used at four particular parts of the year which are March and April for Easter, May, August, and December over the Christmas period.

During Easter, you can book off three days and get a full week off work. For example, in 2024 the Easter bank holidays will fall on March 29 for Good Friday and April 1 for Easter Monday.
Book three days of annual leave at either side of the bank holiday weekend for a full seven days off work. Or use eight days of annual leave for a full two weeks off work, by booking off Monday March 25, to Thursday March 28 plus Tuesday April 2 to Friday April 5.

May
Like the Easter period, May is full of bank holidays which comes with plenty of opportunity to make the most of your annual leave. In 2024, these fall on Monday May 6 and Monday May 27. For nine days off including weekends, take off Tuesday May 7 to Friday May 10 or likewise, Tuesday May 28 to Friday May 31.
August
For an extended summer holiday, take advantage of the August bank holiday which falls on Monday 26 in 2024. By booking off the rest of the week after Monday 26, you will enjoy a full nine days of holiday including weekends while using just four days of annual leave.
December to January
The festive period comprises two bank holidays on Christmas Day and Boxing Day, plus a third on New Year's Day. This means you can book seven days of annual leave next year but get 16 days off work - December 23, 24, 27, 30 and 31, 2024, plus January 2 and 3, 2025.
