Eamonn Holmes has joked that he might swap career to become a full time minister after officiating over the marriage of Coronation Street legend Charlie Lawson - which he filled with touching tributes to the soap star.

The 63-year-old GB News host was called by 64-year-old Corrie star Charlie - who played Jim McDonald from 1989 until 2018 - a month before the glitzy nuptials. And Eamonn was only too happy to say ‘yes’ when asked to officiate the ceremony.

In recent months, Eamonn has been battling ill health which has left him uneasy on his feet and often in pain. He was given a silver throne to sit upon while talking the happy couple through their vows on their big day - while also ensuring that he didn’t steal the limelight as he gave Charlie and Debbie their time to shine.

According to OK! Magazine, Charlie called Eamonn a month before the big day to invite him to conduct the ceremony. And the TV star - who is married to Loose Women host Ruth Langford - joked: “I should maybe become some sort of preacher.”

And during the ceremony he joked to Debbie: "It could have been me, darling" - referencing a running joke that she once confessed to having a rush on the former This Morning star.

Sharing more details about the big day and Eamonn’s involvement at the ceremony, which was held at Shrigley Hall Hotel & Spa in Macclesfield, Cheshire, Charlie said: “We actually legally got married two weeks before the proper wedding at Macclesfield Registration Office, with just three witnesses, so that Eamonn could do the service.

"Eamonn and myself have both been in TV a long time and we've met over the years and become really good friends - we're very similar human beings. Famously, over the years, Eamonn has participated in lots of ceremonies – including George Best's funeral – and I couldn't think of anyone else better to oversee our wedding.

"I'm also terribly aware that Eamonn has had a tough time with his health over the past couple of years, and I just felt that this would give him a bit of a lift. It transpired that he was quite nervous about the whole thing, but he's messaged us since and said that it was one of the best days he'd ever had because everyone was very kind to him."

A host of other stars were also at the wedding to see Charlie and Debbie swap vows. Charlie’s on-screen son, Simon Gregson, who has played Steve McDonald since 1989, was Charlie’s best man on the day.

While other Corrie stars cheering the couple on included Vicky Entwistle, who played Janice Battersby, Alison King who fans will know as Carla Connor, Erica Holroyd actress Claire King, and former Hear'Say star Kym Marsh, who played Michelle Connor. While it seems no expense was spared at the ceremony - as Charlie even arrived via helicopter to help ensure he would be on time.
