A "devastated" Chris Basham has confirmed that he has undergone surgery for the horror leg injury that he suffered for Sheffield United against Fulham.

The 35-year-old suffered the injury when attempting to clear a ball in the first half of his side's 3-1 defeat at Craven Cottage. The game was stopped for around 14 minutes as Basham received extensive treatment, as well as oxygen while on the pitch.

He was then transported to hospital via ambulance, where he has undergone surgery - with another operation due to take place. Basham took to Instagram on Sunday afternoon with an update on his condition and also took time to thank fans for their support.

The veteran defender wrote: "Devastated with my injury in yesterday's game, had my first operation to clean things up and will have a second this week to make things right… would like to thank the football world for their support in messages and social media posts all my close friends and family to Sheffield United for taking care of me and Fulham for their support in the process @timream5 for being there and putting football aside. Catch up with updates in the coming weeks. Bash."

Sheffield United boss Paul Heckingbottom spoke out on Basham's injury immediately after Saturday's showdown. He said: "He's where he needs to be, in hospital with the doctors and the medical team. No-one wants to see that, ever, and when you're involved in it and it's one of your players it's far far worse.

"I've been on a pitch with a teammate and involved when it's someone else but when it's one of your players its tough and you can see that with the players. No [diagnosis] but you guys have seen the pictures, it's terrible, it's horrific.

"We've lost a good player, had to make changes we didn't want to change. We can't blame that. It's going to affect us and it's going to affect us for the season. I don't know what the next step will be, but he's where he needs to be and that's the most important thing. Everyone could see he needs to be in hospital."

Basham, a product of the Bolton Wanderers academy, joined the Blades back in 2014 from Blackpool. He has gone on to make 388 appearances for the Sheffield outfit.

He helped them to promotion from League One during his third campaign at Bramall Lane. He also has two promotions to the Premier League on his CV - Sheffield United coming up as Championship runners-up last term.

He is under contract with the club until the end of the current campaign having most recently penned a new deal with the Blades at the conclusion of the 2021/22 season.
