Antiques Roadshow guest left speechless over value of £25 painting
The owner of a painting bought for £25 after a quick walk in the countryside has been left in disbelief after the piece was valued on the Antiques Roadshow. In a recent episode, filmed at Powis Castle, expert Grant Ford informed the guest hat it was worth way more than she paid for it.
It was initially bought in a charity shop for what you might say was a bargain price and the painting expert for the BBC show was happy to reveal that the artwork was worth between £4000 and £6000. The valuation took the guest's breath away as she exclaimed: "Oh, wow! That’s quite astonishing. For £25, I’m glad I bought it."
The guest was blown away (BBC)Viewers heard that the guest came across the painting by complete chance while she was traveling back from a holiday in the Scottish Highlands with her children a decade ago.
On their journey back to their home in Shropshire and had stopped for a quick walk to break up the long drive. It began to pour down with torrential rain, and seeking shelter she ran to the nearest charity shop with her children. It was there she found the painting, as she told Grant: "I didn’t get a raincoat, I got a painting." Grant joked: "Gosh, I wish I was there before you."
After analysing the piece, the expert concluded that the oil-on-canvas was a 'Confident colourist' style. Signed 'Cunningham' in the lower right corner, it was revealed that the artist was John Cunningham. Explaining a bit about the artist, Grant added: "He taught a great deal, and then when he retired from the Glasgow School of Art as a teacher and a senior lecturer, he became a sort of professional artist in 1985."

The painting by John Cunningham (BBC)"I just think that’s an amazing piece of luck because this is a very sought-after painting. And actually, it holds quite a lot of value,' he said. "You could have found a raincoat that day; luckily you found a brilliant painting."
Antiques Roadshow is back in Wales this weekend for an epsiode filmed at Alexandra Gardens, where Fiona Bruce and the experts uncover more marvellous items. Highlights include some surprisingly valuable jewellery found at car boot sales, a jacket made by the Ojibwe people in Canada and original illustrations of Peter Rabbit by Beatrix Potter.
