Frank Lampard will NOT be appointed as Rangers’ new manager after talks with the Scottish club’s hierarchy.

The former Chelsea, Everton and Derby head coach was among the names linked with the post after Michael Beale was sacked. Lampard held talks with Rangers on Wednesday evening in London over the possibility of him taking over.

But he will not be the Rangers’ next manager now. According to the Daily Telegraph, the discussions were only an initial conversation regarding the project, with the 45-year-old not offered a formal interview.

It is further suggested that Lampard is still keen to return to management but is willing to wait for the right position. He previously admitted that he was biding his time before rushing into a new job.

Speaking on the 'Diary of a CEO' podcast, Lampard said: “It's hard to know. A lot of people say, ‘Get into punditry, it's easy, put your feet up’. I get my enjoyment, what gets my blood flowing, is working and being a coach. So that's what I want to do.

“I'm in no immediate rush to do it. The reality is, off the back of Everton and Chelsea, it's probably time for me to take my time anyway because of what opportunities that may be out there.

“There may be no opportunities, there may be something that comes up that I want to look at and say does that work for me in all purposes. The jobs I've taken have been quite challenging, and a lot are.

“I'm not saying I'm going to be given this, ‘Here you go, this is going to be great’. So I would try to choose well without sounding too picky.”

Lampard’s most recent role saw him appointed as Chelsea’s interim boss - his second stint at Stamford Bridge. He failed to get the Blues back on track during what was a nightmare campaign.

Lampard also had a tricky spell at Everton previously having narrowly guided the Toffees to Premier League survival before his sacking midway through last season. The former England midfielder was not the only name to have been linked with taking over at Ibrox.

Kevin Muscat - currently the manager of Japanese outfit Yokohama F. Marinos - is also among the names who could replace Beale. Club chiefs will hope any successor will help get the side back on track.

Rangers sit third in the Scottish Premiership and already seven points behind rivals Celtic after losing three out of their opening seven league games. They have also struggled in Europe.

Rangers failed to reach the Champions League group stage after being thumped by PSV. While they got back on track with a 1-0 win over Real Betis, they fell to a 2-1 defeat at the hands of Cypriot side Aris Limassol last time out.
