I tried Kylie Minogue's Rose Prosecco to see if it could live up to the hype

A supermarket, celebrity wine can be one of two things- overly hyped because of the heavy marketing or, a really surprisingly good wine with plenty of hype for all the right (tasty) reasons.

Ever since I completed my WSET Level 1 Award in Wines I've had people coming to me for my expert opinion on certain wines, and the one I'm asked the most about is a celebrity wine that people typically say surprised them. Kylie Minogue released a range of wines and the Prosecco Rose has been building up a lot of hype.

I got my hands on the bottle and thought it looked like any other supermarket bubbly rose, the hearts were a lovely touch although it did make me think this might not be a great wine. I'm always apprehensive when too much effort has gone into the bottle as it sometimes is an overcompensation but nevertheless, I continued testing openminded.

This bottle is vegan friendly and made with grapes from the Gambellara region of Italy. With an ABV of 11% it's on the lower side of alcohol levels for a rose wine, although it's important to remember to drink responsibly.

The wine is a pale salmon colour with strong bubbles. I would recommend drinking it in a tulip shaped glass rather than a flute, which is great for bubbles but not flavour, or coupe, which is great for flavour but not bubbles, if you're wanting to actually taste the flavours in the wine and enjoy the bubbles.

It's not a vintage wine and is ready to drink immediately as a result, being best served at around 5 degrees. There are notes of strawberry, raspberry and blossom which are quite typical of a rose wine.

It's made up of a combination of Glera and Pinot Noir grapes. Glera is the grape that is also known as prosecco and Pinot Noir is often used in champagne and can add a little colour to rose. The resulting wine is quite dry although the fruity flavours bring the impression of sweetness to the drink.

The wine is easy going down and I can see why it's so popular. I think personally it's a nice enough wine but it's not exceptional - at £11 a bottle on average I think that's to be expected. For a pink prosecco it's quite solid and really delivers what you would hope. If you're looking for something slightly more budget friendly I would recommend Martini Rosé Sparkling Wine which you can get for £6 at Asda and if you have a bigger budget then Veuve Clicquot Brut Rose Champagne 75Cl is a delicious champagne option that is currently £54 at Tesco.

At this price point you would struggle to do better and it does pair well with food. I paired it with teriyaki salmon and noodles, it's recommended with lightly spiced Asian foods so this was ideal. You can buy the Kylie Minogue Prosecco Rose 75Cl from a number of retailers including Amazon, The Bottle Club, Tesco, Sainsbury's and Morrisons.
