Virgin Wine is one of the most popular wine delivery services and I've seen it popping up as the colder months roll in so it was time to give it a go. The boxes vary in price but all typically contain 12 bottles of wine, you can get a premixed case or you can pick out your favourites in one that you've created yourself.

I got my hands on a custom created box which was a mixture of red and white wines with two bottles of sparkling. The delivery was really prompt, arriving within two days on my doorstep and tracking was provided so I knew down to the exact hour just when it would be coming.

I didn't mix the box myself, instead receiving a selection of some of the bottles considered to be best for this time of year and I was really impressed with the selection. While I'm definitely a fan of rose in the warmer months I do like settling down in autumn with a crisp white or good red.

None of the bottles included are ones that I would have automatically gravitated towards, typically I go for wines from cooler climates in northern Europe. French wines in particular are ones that stand out to me with Coteaux Champenois being my favourites, so I was excited to dive into something new and a little more budget friendly.

There were quite a few reds in my box but the one that stood out most was The Black Pig Merlot. I prefer my reds to not be overly full bodied and while there's definitely a lot of body to this wine it's not overpowering.

It's a south eastern Australian wine which typically would lean in heavily to the strong fruity flavours and that was absolutely the case. I picked up notes of plum and red berries and found this was nice to wind down of an evening with.

My favourite white wine in the box surprised me and if you've never tried Austrian wine I must urge you to try it. Kraft des Landes Gruner Veltliner 2022 is delicious, it's dry and refreshing with it leaving you wanting more (although I must always stress to drink responsibly).

Typically when I try a new wine I only ever had one glass as I'm normally trying more than one bottle in a sitting, this is one of the only ones I've actively wanted to have a second glass of. There's a zingy hit of citrus which is followed by a stone fruit, it's refreshing and really moreish.

At £15.99 it's really well priced, although more expensive than The Black Pig. I think that's part of the beauty of ordering with Virgin Wines as you can really control how much you're willing to spend. If you're after a surprise then I'd opt for a premixed case or you can sign up for the Discovery Wine Club.

I know that I'll now definitely be welcoming Austrian wine from friends at dinner parties as that one has lingered in my memory. I think Virgin Wine is a great way to quickly fill up your wine collection and depending on how much you drink it could keep you stocked for quite a long time.

There are insights you won't find when browsing the supermarket and I'm really impressed by this. You can shop the full range at Virgin Wine now - and first time shoppers can get a £40 voucher to use on WineBank.
