Canelo gives verdict on potential Crawford fight after impressive Charlo win

Canelo Alvarez believes that a fight between he and fellow undisputed champion Terence Crawford "doesn't make sense" after his win over Jermell Charlo last weekend.

The super-middleweight king comfortably defeated Charlo, who held all of the gold at super-welterweight, on Saturday night in Las Vegas. And despite the difference in the weight classes clearly playing a big part in the result, fans still want to see Crawford, undisputed at an even lighter weight, compete with Alvarez.

Crawford has remained relatively coy on the prospect of facing Alvarez in another undisputed vs undisputed fight after a similarly dominant win over Errol Spence Jr earlier this summer. But it appears that the Mexican is not keen on the match-up, saying after his win that such a fight isn't in his future plans.

"If the fight makes sense, go ahead," Alvarez told the media after his win over Charlo. "But right now, the fight with Terence Crawford, it doesn't make sense. I just won, let me enjoy this. This is Canelo, I'm finally back. I feel great and I feel happy because I haven't felt like this in a long time. I'm back."

Crawford was in the crowd on Saturday night, and took to Twitter to both mock Charlo and congratulate Alvarez. "Ok y’all I’m over Jermell Charlo he’s no longer on my hit list," he wrote. "He went out there and laid down and let Canelo spank him like he was his daddy with no type of resistance. Congratulations Canelo you made the so called lion look like a baby cub."

There would be a massive size advantage for Alvarez, who has fought as low as 139lb but as high as 175lb. And Crawford's former promoter Bob Arum believes that the fight would be a mismatch due to that fact, despite believing that the American can't be defeated at his own weight.

“I think Canelo wipes the floor with him. I love Crawford," Arum has said of the bout. "I told you, when Crawford and [Errol] Spence [fought], Crawford would beat the hell out of him. But Canelo is a different proposition. It’s an interesting fight, but I think there’s only one winner.

"Because Canelo, he’s the bigger guy. Canelo is used to fighting at a particular level, and I don’t think that Terence can hurt Canelo, but Canelo can hurt Terence.”
