Liverpool brace for FA fine as Spurs star ignites row with "cry at home" message

The fallout continues from Liverpool's defeat to Tottenham on Saturday, in which a "significant" error from VAR proved to be crucial.

A mix-up between referee Simon Hooper and VAR Darren England meant that a goal from Luis Diaz was wrongly ruled out for offside. The match officials have now been slammed by Reds star Alisson, though Spurs defender Cristian Romero has told them to "go cry at home".

The anger over VAR's dreadful mistake comes as the Football Association weigh up whether to hand Liverpool a fine for receiving too many bookings in Saturday's defeat. Here, Mirror Football rounds up all the latest Liverpool news.

Liverpool brace for FA fine

Liverpool are preparing to be fined by the FA after receiving a raft of bookings in the defeat to Tottenham. Refereeing body the PGMOL will apologise to the Reds for their massive game-defining error.

But Liverpool picked up seven bookings in the game, including Diogo Jota's two. That puts them in line to be handed a £25,000 fine under rules that punish clubs who pick up five or more bookings in one match.

Alexis Mac Allister, Mohamed Salah, Andy Robertson, and Virgil van Dijk all picked up yellow-cards, while assistant manager Peter Krawietz also went into the referee’s book. The FA usually hand down a heavy punishment for teams who pick up a large number of bookings.

Alisson slams VAR

Liverpool keeper Alisson has hit out at VAR, insisting his side have every right to be "outraged" by what happened at Tottenham. But he insisted that players were being held "prisoner" by the rules that punish them if they criticise referees.

“My position is clear, everyone saw it. I don't like talking about arbitration, nor can we talk about arbitration. Sometimes it feels like we are prisoners. When he opens his mouth, he is punished from all sides," he told ESPN.

"Incredibly, these things continue to happen with something so simple, with something that is so objective. And the technology is there. This game has a lot of topics regarding refereeing, I think it's up to you to talk a lot. You have to talk, because this kind of thing is very frustrating. Very frustrating.”

Romero sparks Liverpool row

Spurs star Cristian Romero has sparked a row with Liverpool midfielder Alexis Mac Allister. Romero played all 90 minutes as his side claimed a dramatic last-minute win over the Reds on Saturday.

But the game was marred by controversy involving VAR, with Luis Diaz having a goal wrongly disallowed for offside. Mac Allister was fuming after the game, replying to a celebratory post from Romero by writing: "Normal when you have 12 men".

Romero pulled no punches in his response to his international team-mate though. The defender replied to Mac Allister by writing: "Cry at home".
