Beloved franchise for kids and adults alike, Pokemon will get a stop motion makeover in a new series announced by Netflix. The "world-building" show has had a mixed reaction online as fans are unsure how to take the news.

Pokemon Concierge will be the latest in a long line of shows set in the world of Pokemon, with the first airing almost 26 years ago.

The difference in this new show is the media and format, instead of an animated series following a trainer on their bid to become "the very best", it will be stop motion and focus on one location.

Minyoung Kim, Vice President of Netflix Content in Asia, announced: "Netflix is looking forward to delighting fans in Japan and around the world with 'Pokemon Concierge', an entirely new visual and storytelling experience featuring ground-breaking stop-motion animation set in the Pokemon world in close collaboration with The Pokemon Company.

"We're also excited to reveal this new series on Pokemon Day and provide fans with even more things to look forward to on this special holiday celebrating the popular franchise."

Pokemon Day takes place annually to celebrate the anniversary of the Japanese release for the original games Red and Green on February 27, 1996.

A teaser trailer for the new show was dropped, featuring a Psyduck waddling along a beach. A voiceover says: "This is the Pokemon Resort, Pokemon are the guests here. Here is the story of the resort's concierge."

Pokemon Concierge is from animation studio Dwarf Studios, which created Netflix's popular stop-motion anime Rilakkuma and Kaoru. It is thought that this new show will have a similar soft and calm energy, diving into the wider world of Pokemon.

Protagonist Haru works at the Pokemon resort and the story will feature all the guests who come to stay in a small slice-of-life style show, away from the leagues and battles of the main series.

There is no release date for the show yet but Kim promised fans they would see it later this year, however not everyone was enthusiastic about the release.

One said: "I bet its [sic] going to be short cuz stop motion takes forever and also pretty expensive" while another mused: "Wonder how this will go."

"Its either good or absolutely awful," added another while a fourth simply said: "No, thanks."

Others were more enthusiastic, with many happy to see often forgotten Psyduck "front and centre as he should be" in the new trailer.

A fan said "you have my attention" while another added "this looks so cute, can't wait!"

Some fans joked that the show resembled a smash hit anthology series, calling the stop motion series "Pokemon White Lotus" after the award winning show The White Lotus.

A live action Pokemon show is also in the works, following from the success of the live action film Detective Pikachu and the steady popularity of the core games. Kim did not give any updates on this show during the announcement and fans are still waiting for a release date.
