Alexis Mac Allister was told by Tottenham defender Cristian Romero to go and "cry at home" after claiming that Liverpool played against "12 men" in their controversial defeat to Spurs.

The pair of Premier League stars, who are team-mates at international level with Argentina, were on opposing sides as Tottenham grabbed a dramatic 2-1 victory on Saturday. Liverpool were left furious after having two players sent off for debatable red cards and a goal which would've put them in the lead wrongly disallowed for offside.

Mac Allister's side swiftly received an apology from the PGMOL, who explained that the offside was a result of "significant human error," but the Reds midfielder was still fuming at referee Simon Hooper when he took to Instagram after the match.

Replying to fellow World Cup winner Romero's celebratory post, Mac Allister raged in a now deleted comment: "Normal when you have 12 men." Romero was quick to respond and wrote back: "Cry at home."

Mac Allister's outburst made him the first Liverpool player to criticise the officiating on social media. Manager Jurgen Klopp had already hit out at multiple decisions, beginning with Curtis Jones and Diogo Jota's hotly-debated red cards.

"I never saw a game like this with the most unfair circumstances, crazy decisions," the Reds boss fumed. "The first red card, Curtis steps on the ball and goes over. Not a bad tackle. It looks different in slow motion. He steps full throttle on the ball and goes over the ball. That is unlucky.

"For Jota, first yellow was not a yellow. Then he gets a second and to defend with eight outfield players is tricky." Klopp added on Diaz's disallowed goal: "That is not offside when you see it, they drew their lines wrong. The ball is between Mo [Salah's] legs, they drew the line wrong and didn't judge the moment when Mo passed the ball right. It is so tough to deal with it."

The Premier League have already moved to replace the lead VAR from the match, Darren England, and his assistant, Dan Cook, for their respective next fixtures. England was due to oversee Nottingham Forest at home to Brentford on Sunday afternoon and Cook had been set to be on duty for Monday night's clash between Fulham and Chelsea.
