'Rishi Sunak is only thinking about votes and ignoring that world is burning'

Our harrowing pictures of malnourished two-year-old Nasro in Somalia will bring tears to your eyes that dehydration does not allow hers to shed.

The underweight toddler is a victim of the worst drought ever to grip this unfortunate East African nation, which is now sitting on the climate change front line. And surely no one looking at her today would want her to die just so we can hold on to our petrol cars and gas boilers a little longer.

Yet that is exactly what Prime Minister Rishi Sunak is doing by postponing targets essential to getting us to net zero by 2050. But his mind is now set on short-term electoral gain. Even if he is still PM in 2025, he will not be 25 years later – so it’s not his problem.

Why worry if London falls below sea level? Its defences mean it is unlikely to flood. The people of Leeds may welcome Melbourne’s weather. Yet for countries such as Somalia, global warming is already a matter of life and death.

And little Nasro is just one of millions of children around the globe who are facing the fatal consequences. Unless we meet global net zero commitments there will be millions more.

A rightmare

Suella Braverman will not be surprised her disgusting, divisive migrant speech in Washington last week hoovered up backing from the far-right. It is all part of the Home Secretary’s plan to become the next Tory leader. She got the endorsement of neo-Nazi Mark Collett, the leader of Patriotic Alternative.

And a supportive tweet from Britain First. It is no surprise, either, that Rishi Sunak was too weak to be able to stop her attacking vulnerable women and gay asylum seekers, even though her hateful rhetoric was not backed by facts.

Of the 75,000 asylum claims last year, only 1,300 mentioned sexuality. At this week’s Manchester conference, Ms Braverman will lead the Tory right battling moderates for the heart and soul of the Conservative Party. It would be a tragedy if the winning faction is the one without a heart.

Hero for heroes

Generous Rovers barman Antony Cotton has given his TV game show winnings to a care village for veterans. And, fittingly, the Coronation Street star’s money will be used so that the vets can have their own bar. Which means the old soldiers will always report for last orders.
