'I thought I was three months pregnant - but it turned out to be a tumour'
A mother was astonished to learn that what she had believed to be a second baby was actually a tumour.
Sandra Lundry and her husband Garrett thought they were expecting another child but couldn’t get in to see a doctor until the Kansas native was 12 weeks along.
The mum had all the pregnancy symptoms - including struggling to eat or keep things down. But before her first doctor's appointment, Sandra lost an abnormal amount of weight, sparking concern.
Furthermore, the doctor couldn't hear the baby's heartbeat, which signalled that something was very wrong.

Sandra said: “They tried every source to be able to find the heartbeat and they couldn’t find it. And I knew at that time that, I was like, ‘this is not normal’. At 12 weeks, you should be able to hear the heartbeat pretty immediately.”
The couple, in a jarring discovery, learned that their incoming bundle of joy was really a molar pregnancy, which occurs when a tumor develops in the uterus as a result of a nonviable pregnancy. Mayo Clinic says that molar pregnancies tend to not carry embryos, which was the case with Sandra, KSNT reported.
“So we did a sonogram and they actually discovered what was called a complete molar pregnancy, which is pretty rare," Sandra said. She underwent surgery to remove the tumor three days after learning she wasn't really pregnant. That, in her mind, was the end of it.
Sandra made it a point to remain upbeat during her battle - not just for her family and her young son but also herself (KSNT)When she thought the tumor was gone, it returned and developed into cancer. Her tumor was being fed by the hormone human chorionic gonadotropin (hCG).
It returned several times. It once extended to her uterus and lungs. She had numerous rounds of chemotherapy before undergoing a partial hysterectomy.
"We decided to do a hysterectomy in June of 2022,” she said. “Complete chemotherapy, so doing two more rounds, I believe, finishing in August of 2022. And so I just hit my one year of being chemo and cancer-free.”
Sandra made it a point to remain upbeat during her battle, not just for her family and her young son, but also for herself. She said: “I never expected to go through any of this,” she said. Obviously! It’s not like anybody wakes up one day and thinks, ‘Today…I’m going to beat cancer. I’m going to go through all these things.'”
“I think you just take life as it comes and then you make the best of it,” she said. “And I just want my story to be something that people look at and know that they have the ability to go through that and do it too.”
