When Arsenal’s Katie McCabe smacked in one of the Women’s World Cup goals of the summer directly from a corner against Canada, the Republic of Ireland star found herself in the limelight.

The 28-year-old also found herself the subject of an invitation from Conor McGregor to visit his Dublin pub after what the UFC star dubbed an “iconic” goal.

McCabe, who just penned an extension with Arsenal after mooted uncertainty over her future, has rarely failed at popping up and delivering iconic moments of brilliance, whether for club or country.

Her penchant for doing so has earned her a nomination for this year’s Ballon d’Or, a feat never before achieved by an Irish woman. And the Arsenal defender recently revealed her exploits at her country’s first-ever Women’s World Cup also earned her plenty of praise from McGregor along with a special visit to his pub, the Black Forge Inn.

“Conor invited me and my family to his pub back in Dublin, which was really kind of him and his family to look after us,” McCabe told TalkSport.

“I guess when you’re playing on the world stage, there’s more eyes on you. You’re attracting these high-profile athletes as well. It’s no more than the girls deserve to be playing on those world stages because people have sacrificed a lot, especially the girls on my Ireland team.

“They’ve sacrificed so much to get there and achieve those moments. It’s the beauty of a team sport [as] you’re able to share it together then.”

Despite the trip to McGregor's pub, McCabe has yet to formally McGregor, though the footballer is certain their lives will intertwine eventually. “He was on holiday,” McCabe said. “So, I didn’t meet him in the end, but I’m sure we’ll cross paths in the next few months, I’m sure.”

McCabe’s alacrity for the game’s physical side has cut her a reputation as a fearless competitor, a reputation relished by the Arsenal star. “Everyone knows their strengths and weaknesses, right, and I think one of my big strengths as a footballer is the physical side of me,” she said.

“People can interpret me being physical whatever way they want. I can’t control their opinions. I always play fair but play hard and I respect it if players give it back to me. It’s a contact sport [and] you have to have a bit of physicality now and then. I love a tackle and I’ll always have that ingrained in me.”

McCabe has been at Arsenal for eight years, racking up 109 appearances for the club across all competitions to become one of the most beloved players within the Gunners' fanbase.

Last year, McCabe made headlines when Kim Kardashian's son, Saint West, was spotted boasting her name on the back of his shirt as the reality TV family took in the Gunners' Europa League loss to Sporting Lisbon at Emirates Stadium.
