'Suella Braverman remains in place because Rishi Sunak is too weak to oust her'

Rishi Sunak should never have appointed Suella Braverman in the first place.

The Home Secretary had already proved she was unfit to be a Cabinet minister when she was found guilty of breaching the ministerial code. Her divisive and dangerous speech in Washington DC this week only confirmed the Prime Minister’s lack of judgement in bringing her back into Government.

Questioned yesterday, Mr Sunak refused to endorse Ms Braverman’s claim that multiculturalism has failed. If he disagrees so profoundly with her views he should not have her in his Cabinet. The reason she remains in place is because he is either too weak to oust her or he is privately happy for her spout her shock-jock bile because he believes it will help the Tories at the polls.

Neither reflects well on the Prime Minister. He’s too feeble to act or too desperate to win at any cost. If the Conservatives believe they can only win the election by stirring up hatred, it only underlines why they are unfit for office.

Proud symbol

It was a place were walkers rested, ashes were scattered, couples pledged their love and memories were forged. It is beyond comprehension why anyone would have wanted to fell such a much-loved landmark, sparking anger across the nation. This is a dark day for nature and for all those who cherish our glorious countryside.

A screen great

On stage or screen, Sir Michael Gambon never delivered a dud performance. For some he will always be Albus Dumbledore, others will remember him for Maigret. Not for nothing did other actors refer to him as “The Great Gambon”.
