Colorado Buffaloes head coach Deion Sanders did not hold back when revealing just why highly touted Cormani McClain has been limited to a limited amount of game time so far this season.

Sanders has been busy making an immediate impact in Colorado since leaving JSU to become the head coach at the Buffaloes. After two years in Mississippi, Sanders made the switch to Denver in the off-season and has enjoyed a good start to the season.

The Buffaloes are 3-1 after the opening four games of the season. Part of that success has been down to Sanders’ son, Shedeur, who is the starting quarterback in Colorado and has been tipped to be a candidate for this year’s Heisman Trophy.

Sanders brought his son to Colorado following his exit from JSU, and he was not the only player to make the switch in the off-season. McClain was one of the top high-school prospects to enter NCAA college football this year.

The cornerback was expected to move to Miami but changed his mind and decided to play for the Buffaloes. However, he has not had as much time on the field as many experts may have predicted.

The freshman has played just one Colorado’s opening four games of the season, which came in the 42-6 loss to Oregon on September 23. He made two tackles and is yet to make an interception.

Sanders was asked about McClain’s lack of minutes on the field, and what the freshman could do to get more game time. In response, the NFL Hall of Fame gave a blunt explanation of what was required.

"Study and prepare,” Sanders told reporters on Wednesday, via. “Be on time for meetings, show up to meetings.

“Understand what we’re doing as a scheme. Want to play this game. Desire to play this game. Desire to be the best in this game, at practice, in film room and on your own.

"You do know, I check film time for each player upon the week. Thursday, I need film time from the whole staff so I can see who’s been preparing. And that’s just not about Cormani. That’s about a multitude of things.

"So if I don’t see that you would be a fool to put somebody out there and they’re unprepared."

Colorado’s next game is against No.8 USC, which will see the team come up against one of the most talented quarterbacks in NCAA college football. Caleb Williams is widely expected to be the No.1 overall pick in the 2024 NFL Draft, even though there have been rumours that the QB could remain in college for another season - most likely if he is unhappy with whichever NFL team end up with the first chouice.

USC are 4-0 for the season with Williams showing Heisman Trophy form so far. It remains to be seen if Sanders decided to play McClain in one of the toughest games of the season so far for Colorado.
