A man was rushed to hospital hours after landing in Ibiza when the car he was in crashed and flipped three times and tore the scalp from his head.

Vincent Brodie, 30, had been sitting in the passenger seat of the vehicle and suffered a huge laceration to his right arm and a tear to his artery in his thigh. His friends sustained minor injuries in the September 8 crash and rushed him to hospital where he needed three operations to repair his scalp. His mum, Sarah, flew to Ibiza the next day. Vincent, a HGV driver, was finally approved to fly home last week but remains unable to work while he awaits further plastic surgery.

Sarah told the Liverpool Echo : “I can't remember getting there. I was in total panic mode. I was just thinking I could get there and he was going to be dead. I just kept thinking he couldn't be alive with the trauma he'd had. I was just in bits. I couldn't believe how ill he looked, just lying there in bed with his head in such pain. I couldn't wait to get him home. The doctors in Ibiza, I cannot thank them enough.

“Vincent has life-long head injuries. He's been left with tinnitus in his ear, his anxiety is through the roof, he's off work. He's scared he'll lose his apartment because he can't pay the £500-a-month rent. I've had to borrow money myself to fly there and back. Vincent is the baby of the family, and the only boy. Everyone in the family has been affected by this. It's not just a stupid accident with a few stitches - it's life changing. I don't know how he will come back from it."

Sarah said she has been trying to get in touch with Europcar, the car hire company which provided the Audi her son was travelling in, as she claims the airbags did not deploy when the car collided with another vehicle on the country road. She added: "I just don't understand why the airbags didn't deploy. I don't have a clue. Not one airbag went off.”

A spokesman for Europcar said: "Europcar is co-operating fully with the local authorities and as this is an on-going investigation cannot provide further information at this stage. It is in touch with the customer regarding the matter."
