BBC Breakfast viewers were saddened as a popular host on the morning show announced his departure.

Ben Thompson has been filling in for regular host Charlie Stayt recently, as the popular host - who usually hosts alongside Naga Munchetty from Thursday to Saturday - has been absent from the morning show. The journalist was missing on Friday and Saturday’s episodes last week, prompting Ben to fill in for him once again, as viewers speculated Charlie was on holiday.

Ben, 41, has proved hugely popular with BBC Breakfast fans, who have commented on his immediate chemistry with co-host Naga, and they were disappointed when he announced he would be taking a break from presenting the show. Taking to X, formerly known as Twitter, Ben revealed his appearance on Monday was the last time he’d be appearing on the iconic red sofa for a while.

“Thanks for your company! Last BBC Breakfast of the week today, popping up with a bit of BBC News tomorrow then some time off,” he wrote. His fans soon flooded the comments, and replied with commiserations. “That’s a shame, will miss you on our screens Ben. Enjoy your time off,” one wrote. “Enjoy your time off! Will miss you!” another added, while many others praised his refreshing relationship with Naga. “Ben you’ve been the best thing on breakfast for ages,” another commented. “I love to see you on BBC breakfast. More please, such fun,” one agreed. “The way you and @TVNaga01 bounce off each other is good to watch,” another chimed in.

Others begged Ben to return to BBC Breakfast, as they were still in hysterics after the presenting duo went viral last week thanks to their reaction to a hilarious video. During Friday’s show, Ben and Naga were fighting for breath as they burst out laughing at a clip of a man getting hit in the head by a low flying pigeon. “I don't know why this amuses me so much. Neither pigeon nor man were hurt,” Ben explained. “'This is Michael Spiers, from Nottingham. He described it as being whacked full-pelt with a feathered pillow.”

Barely able to contain herself, Naga giggled: “I'm sorry. When you watch it and you know you're not supposed to laugh and it makes you laugh even more. The pigeon is absolutely fine. It's really good CCTV coverage.” Ben joked it was “better than some of the filming we do”, which sent Naga off again in a fit of uncontrollable laughter. “I'm really hot,” she gasped. “We're going to have to get makeup in to sort this out. The pigeon and the man are fine, by the way.”
