Woman's body 'stops working' after she eats jar of "delicious" pesto

A Brazilian woman spent a year in hospital after eating some pesto that saw her come down with a very rare illness.

Doralice Carneiro Sobreira Goes, 47, a public servant and gymnast, took a trip to her local market and purchased a jar of the pine nut delicacy to use for a variety of meals. However, soon after consuming the "delicious" pesto (which had no expiration date on its label), she fell ill.

“The pesto didn't have an expiration date, he didn't give me storage instructions either but I was a frequent customer,” Doralice said. “I left the market and kept the sauce in the pantry until I eventually used it. The pesto remained with unchanged appearance, colour, aroma, and flavour. When I decided to finally have some, it was delicious. [The next day], I [slept] for 11 hours straight. My body didn't feel right, my breathing had gotten worse, and my tongue felt like it was tingling.”

She told NeedToKnow.co.uk: “I drove 20km to the hospital, parked the car, and then my body stopped working.” Doralice had to throw herself out of the car as she was unable to move her legs and arms, then she shouted out to an employee who helped her into a wheelchair and escorted her quickly into the hospital.

Doctors believed toxins had reached Doralice’s nervous system, after conducting a CT scan and an examination by a neurologist, in which they realised her body was barely responding to commands, as she could only move two toes.

Doralice was diagnosed with botulism - a very rare illness caused by a toxin that attacks the body’s nerves and can cause difficulty breathing muscle paralysis, and death. She was prescribed an anti-botulin drug, which is meant to be taken within 48 hours so the drug can act effectively on the bacteria.

After taking the drug, Doralice was able to move parts of her body again: “I soon was able to move my fingers and speak small sentences again,” she continues: “I was also given physiotherapy to strengthen the muscles in my body.”

The toxin seemed to have developed within the pesto from a strain of bacteria, which doctors agree, was probably the cause of her sudden health decline. Whilst she survived the painful ordeal, Doralice had to stay in hospital for a year to recover and undergo rehabilitation.

Which included suction cups, Myofascial release, Pulmonary physiotherapy, feeding tubes, and dry compressions. As she was able to gain more strength within her upper body, she was able to play table tennis. Furthermore, Doralice has been able to breathe unassisted, as well as feeding herself and using the toilet.

From this experience, Doralice is extremely mindful about where she purchases her food: “I’m careful when buying from restaurants, shops, and fairs,” she continues, “I now only like to buy food from manufacturers to avoid any more accidents.”

The State Health Surveillance Department visited both the shop owner and their store to check what conditions the pesto was made in. The shop owner has apologised for the incident but no further action has been taken at this stage.
