Sophia Loren was reportedly hospitalised over the weekend after allegedly sustaining an injury in a fall at home.

The actor, 89 - whose career has included roles in films like Two Women (1961) and Marriage Italian Style (1964) - is said to have undergone emergency surgery on Sunday after sustaining injuries in a fall at her home in Switzerland.

The Oscar winner is said to have sustained several fractures in the incident, including one to her femur that reportedly needed surgery. It's been reported that her recovery will include 'a short convalescence' before 'long rehabilitation.'

A source told The Hollywood Reporter that there is 'cautious optimism' about the outcome of the operation and Sophia's recovery. Sources added to the outlet that her sons Carlo and Edoardo are by her side at the hospital.

The news was also shared by the restaurant chain named after her, with the team behind the venture having issued a statement on Instagram about her health. It read: "A fall at her home in Geneva today caused Ms Loren hip fractures."

It went on to state that Sophia will now experience a "short period of recovery." The statement continued: "Operated with a positive outcome, she will now have to observe a short period of recovery and follow a road to rehabilitation."

The statement on the platform concluded: "Thankfully everything worked out for the best and the Lady will be back with us very soon. The whole team at Sophia Loren Restaurant takes this opportunity to wish her a speedy recovery."

Sophia's decades-long career in the acting industry began in her native Italy. She subsequently had leading role in international projects such as The Pride and the Passion (1957), Desire Under the Elms (1958) and Houseboat (1958).

She received an Academy Award for her performance in the film Two Women (1961). Other accolades in her career included the Academy Honorary Award for lifetime achievements in 1991 and a BAFTA Award. She was nominated for a second Academy Award for her role in Marriage Italian Style (1964).

Her other acting credits include roles in films like The Voyage (1974) and A Special Day (1977). The award-winning actor more recently appeared in films including Between Strangers (2002), Nine (2009) and The Life Ahead (2020).
