Sergio Aguero has admitted that he would love Pep Guardiola to reunite with Lionel Messi as coach of Argentina but has warned that the role may not be as fulfilling as his current job.

The former Eastlands hero is in a unique position when it comes to pondering whether the World Cup winner will ever play under his former boss once more. The pair enjoyed a storied spell together at Barcelona between 2008 and 2012, when they became European champions twice.

Now, Aguero - who starred for Argentina on 101 occasions before hanging up his boots in 2021 - has given his verdict on whether Guardiola will ever manage his nation. The retired star had the admiration of his old manager during his time with the Cityzens and is famously a close friend of Messi.

In an interview with Stake, he revealed how he would love the current Manchester City boss to eventually take up the reigns with the current World Cup holders. Under contract at the Etihad Stadium until 2025, any hypothetical switch could still be years away but that did not stop Aguero giving his opinion that he'd love to see Guardiola in charge of Messi and Argentina.

He said: "Obviously, as an Argentinian, yes, it would be really good if he could be the Argentina national coach but well, I don’t know. And obviously nowadays as I’m an ex-player and looking at it as a fan of the national team, I think that obviously everyone would be happy, right?"

That said, the former Premier League marksman did caveat his wish by warning his former manager that leaving his current post may not be well-advised. Aguero explained that he would be concerned that an international job may not suit Guardiola's famously hands-on approach.

He asserted: "I think that we’ll have to see, where he wants to go, which challenge he wants it to be, what managers want is to take over a country and bring success to it, right? And because, in the end, between Argentina and Spain or to go to Brazil or Germany or Italy, those teams, or England, they’re historic teams.

"You know there is very little margin for error with there being so few games. I think that with that Pep style of play, in a national team, I think he would miss the training sessions. I mean, the thing of teaching players and coordinating things that he wants to do with a team, it doesn’t have that."

The five-time English champion added: "National teams have two weeks, one week and the players come in tired after they’ve travelled and I think in that sense, Pep could end up thinking, no, I’m not going to go into it, it puts me in a predicament or I’d prefer to go ahead and do it this way."

At present Lionel Scaloni continues to coach the Argentina national team after leading his country to World Cup glory in Qatar last year. Guardiola, meanwhile, is out to defend three trophies this season with Manchester City after masterminding a historic treble last term.
