Netflix and Amazon are going head to head by producing rival documentaries about the disappearance of Madeleine McCann.

The streaming giants are ploughing millions of pounds into the shows which will delve into the background of suspect Christian Brueckner. Production crews have spent the summer in Germany, where the paedophile, 46, grew up and committed some of his vile crimes.

Those interviewed include prosecutor Hans Christian Wolters, who is heading the ongoing probe into Brueckner. Netflix landed a worldwide smash-hit in 2019 when the series The Disappearance of Madeleine McCann aired. Now it is set for an unprecedented ratings war with Amazon with their rival Brueckner documentaries.

Amazon producers are understood to have interviewed a woman who claims the German raped her in Portugal. BBC bosses have also given the green light for a Panorama show investigating the case. Brueckner is being probed by German detectives over Madeleine’s disappearance in Portugal in May 2007. She was nearly four when she disappeared on holiday in the resort of Praia da Luz.

Brueckner was already awaiting trial in Braunschweig accused of rapes and child sex assaults committed in Portugal. But the charges were dropped earlier this year after a court ruling over which German region had jurisdiction.
