Top 10 acts that make Brits feel more positive - like receiving a compliment

Brits have shared the top 10 things that help them feel more positive – from receiving a compliment or a nice message from a loved one, to being offered a seat on public transport, research has found.

A survey of 2,000 adults found that 84% have had their day brightened after being smiled at by a stranger – and, for 77%, even witnessing a positive interaction between others they don't know can help lift their mood.

Other acts that encourage positive feelings include someone holding a door open for you, letting you pull out at a junction – or even just offering you a cup of tea as a solution to all of life's problems.

And 28% claim to feel more inspired when their positivity is boosted – with 81% more likely to help others when they are feeling positive themselves.

In fact, over three-quarters (78%) say they become more positive the more they give back to others – and 83% believe such acts have a knock-on effect for others.

To help spread positivity and raise a smile, DJ, chef, and TV personality, Big Zuu, took to the streets of London to spread cheer, with a group dubbed the “Smile Society”.

The happy team set out to make passers-by smile using a range of tactics such as giving compliments, taking selfies, and even performing impromptu rap verses.

Big Zuu is working with belVita, which commissioned the research to launch its “Give a Smile, Help Fight Food Poverty” initiative in partnership with food charity, FareShare, which aims to help those affected by donating up to 100,000 meals.

Big Zuu said: “Leading the Smile Society and being tasked with the mission of spreading positivity has been really important to me. In doing so, we’re giving back to others, and taking part in the battle against food insecurity.

“The Give a Smile, Help Fight Food Poverty initiative isn’t just encouraging people to feel more positive in their daily lives – it’s helping some of the more vulnerable people in society, using the power of a smile.

“I hope it inspires us all to be a bit kinder, and to use our positive energy for good.”

The study, carried out via OnePoll, found that when Brits are feeling positive and inspired to give back, some of the top ways they will do so are by picking up litter (26%), donating to charity (25%), or making someone a hot meal or drink (24%).

Others will hold a door open for someone (59%), offer their seat on public transport (37%), or pay someone a compliment (25%).

Amy Lucas, belVita brand manager at Mondelēz International, said: “We believe in the power of positive energy, and understand that even the smallest of actions, such as smiling at a stranger, can make their day “that” much better.

“This has inspired us to use the power of a smile to spread positivity, and ultimately helping others in need.

“Many people in the UK experience food insecurity, which is something that we want to change. Our mission is to use the power of positivity for a greater good – and, through the nation’s smiles, help to fight food poverty by donating meals to FareShare.”
