Police have seized a dog and arrested a 53-year-old man after another violent street attack was captured on CCTV.

Officers including armed cops were deployed to Handsworth Road in Handsworth, Sheffield early Tuesday evening. Armed officers were responding to reports that a man out walking his pet had been attacked by a larger bull mastiff-type dog.

Chilling CCTV captured the brutal attack that took place alongside a busy road. It shows a man desperately trying to protect his smaller pet dog while another dog off its lead targets them both. He is seen trying to lift his black-haired pet in the air after the unaccompanied dog had bitten its leg.

The attacking dog then gripped the man's upper arm in his jaw, dragging the owner into the road. Eventually a passing red car pulls up to distract the attacking dog which runs off chasing the man’s pet. The man's arm was bitten and he also suffered chest wounds, but none said to be life threatening or altering. The loose dog responsible for the attack, which took place around 5.40pm on Tuesday, was seized by the police.

South Yorkshire Police said: "The man received serious injuries to his arm and chest but these are not thought to be life-changing or life-threatening. Officers trapped the dog – a bull mastiff-type dog - in a contained area and were eventually able to seize it and safely remove it from the location. A 53-year-old man from Sheffield has now been arrested on suspicion of having a dangerous dog out of control and remains in police custody at this time as enquiries continue." They appealed for anyone with footage, including dash-cam footage, to get in contact with them.

Locals praised a passing driver who appeared to slowly nudge the attacking dog with their car to stop the attack. One local called it an "accident waiting to happen," suggesting the dog had escaped after jumping a wall, pointing out the attack happened very near a nursery.

Another said: "That's so scary it's near a doctors surgery, nursery and schools. Dread to think if it had been school run time.." A third added: "That's a pal of mine his little black dog is a rescue dog. I feel sick watching that hope they are both ok." Another claimed there had been a separate attack recently when a dog lost its eye.

Chief Inspector Emma Cheney added: "We know these incidents will cause concern among those who live near the location, and for those who witnessed the incident this would have been upsetting. We want to reassure people the dog has been seized and removed while we carry out our enquiries and determine exactly what happened.

“All incidents of this nature are treated with the utmost diligence, and we will investigate thoroughly to ensure the community is kept safe. We would like to thank members of the public and medical staff who came to the aid of the victim, who has been taken to hospital for treatment at this time."
