Coronation Street stars were forced to abandon filming on Monday due to the extreme weather conditions.

Samia Longchampon, who plays Maria Sunderland on the ITV soap, took to Instagram yesterday to share the behind-the-scenes update with her 488k followers. "Rained off the cobbles this morning..." she wrote, before adding, "Great start to a Monday." The Coronation Street set is located in Salford, Manchester, which was hit by heavy showers and even thunder storms in the early hours of September 18.

The weather disruption was so severe that ITV bosses halted production altogether, forcing the cast to take a break from shooting scenes outside and seek shelter indoors until it was once again safe to continue. Colson J Smith, who plays Craig Tinker, also detailed the impact of the torrential rain on his social media. The 25-year-old shared a photo of him on his Instagram Story wearing socks and sandals with the caption, "Almost had to go into the winter wardrobe this morning."

This is far from the first time poor weather conditions have thrown Coronation Street's cast into disarray. Back in January 2010, production was suspended after heavy snowfall prevented numerous members of crew and cast from travelling safely to the set. A similar situation played out in 2017, when the onset of Storm Doris' brutally strong winds and torrential rain brought filming of exterior scenes to a complete standstill.

Samia's update comes shortly after the iconic soap star returned from a chaotic family vacation to Mallorca. The 41-year-old revealed that her Spanish holiday had been plagued by flight delays (there and back), stolen bank card, a tornado" as well as sickness on arrival. "I had a bit of a bug for the first few days," she admitted. Fortunately, it wasn't all doom and gloom for the Cooking with the Stars winner, who has been married French professional ice skater Sylvain Longchambon since 2016. The couple welcomed their first child together, a son named Rhys, in 2015. Samia also has a daughter, Freya, with ex-husband Matt Smith.

"We managed to get there and back safely," she continued. "I got my stolen money back from my bank, we stayed safe in the storm and we got to spend time in the sun, see friends and eat lovely food."
