Diogo Jota says he'd love to play alongside Bernardo Silva at Liverpool - but is unlikely to ever see his dream become a reality.

Manchester City star Silva recently penned a new one-year contract extension at the Etihad, committing his future to Pep Guardiola's side until 2026. Interestingly, that new deal contains a £50million release clause, albeit one that cannot be activated until next summer.

Silva, who helped City win the Champions League, Premier League and FA Cup last season, scored and assisted in his side's 3-1 win over West Ham on Saturday. He has three years remaining on his deal in Manchester, but has previously been keen to depart, most notably for Barcelona.

In theory, next summer Liverpool would be able to sign the Portuguese star for a cut-price fee. And ex-Wolves striker Jota is a huge fan. The Liverpool forward recently admitted he would love to play alongside Silva at Anfield in the future - even over the likes of international teammates Cristiano Ronaldo and Bruno Fernandes.

Jota told That's Football: "Bernardo. "For me, he's probably one of the most intelligent football guys I've ever known and the way he can hide the ball from opponents is special."

Silva had been tipped to leave Manchester last summer with offers from Paris Saint-Germain and the Saudi Pro League. But he decided to stick with the treble winners in a show of faith to Guardiola, who brought him to the club from Monaco in 2017.

After signing his renewal last month, Silva said: “I’ve had six incredible years at Manchester City and I’m delighted to extend my time here. Winning the Treble last season was extremely special and it’s exciting to be part of a squad where there is such a hunger and passion.

"Success makes you want even more, and this club gives me that opportunity to keep on winning. I love the manager, my team-mates and the fans and hope we can share even more great memories in the coming years.”

Jota chose Silva over Ronaldo, but the Liverpool frontman still idolises Ronaldo for what he has achieved during his illustrious career. In 2021, the former Wolves, Porto and Atletico Madrid striker told FourFourTwo: "Cristiano was my idol - I saw him playing at the highest level at Manchester United, winning the Ballon d'Or and other awards.

"Being Portuguese, I've always looked up to him as an example to follow. When I made my international debut against Lithuania in November 2019, I came on as a substitute for him, which made the moment more special for me. I can only be grateful to have the opportunity to share a dressing room with him."

There's no doubt that should Jota's wishes come true, Silva would add an extra dimension of quality and pizazz to the Liverpool attack. That's despite the Reds being stacked in the forward positions, with Luis Diaz, Darwin Nunez, Mohamed Salah, Cody Gakpo and Jota amongst those Jurgen Klopp can choose from.

Unfortunately for Jota, it seems unlikely that that will ever happen at Anfield, with Silva not keen on joining any of City's Premier League rivals in the future - and City themselves certainly not keen on allowing him to stay in England should he ever exit the Etihad.
